Peak softness setup?

I like it soft! I'd like to hear what your thoughts are on what would be the absolute softest feeling setup a player can play, right from irons, ball, grips, perhaps even glove!

Everyone seem to have their own definition of "soft", so I'll have a stab at explaining what I mean

  •  Un-clicky
  •  Low, thuddy sound
  •  Feel like the ball sticks to the club face for a long time
  •  No "impact shock"/reverberations

What regulation conforming equipment would one use if optimising 100% for softness?

Thanks in advance!

Ps. This is mainly a thought experiment and a bit of fun, so let's keep the "whatever performs the best" stuff to a minimum 🙂  Ds.

I’ll take a stab at this, even though I’m far from an expert on this and do not play anything like these.  Because of this, I haven’t hit that many of the clubs in this category.  That said, I like these thought experiments so here we go.

irons - mizuno mp14’s or so,etching similar (these are just a club I’ve hit a fair amount).  My dad also has an old set of McCgregor VIP’’s that feel amazing.  Once I was paired with a guy who had some of the callaway legacy stenson blacks in the bag.  I hit a grand total of 2 balls with his 8 iron and that was a great feeling iron, that would be a lot more playable than butterknife blades for me.  But with so few swings it is hard to rate them accurately.  One iron that I think people will mention, that I disagree with is Miuras.  They feel so good, but not that soft.  Just good.  I’ve only ever made a handful of swings with Miuras as well, so my judgement could be off on them. The feel of them stuck with me enough that I have kind of wanted a set ever since I hit them, even though they don’t really match up well with my game.  Just not that soft.

Ball- softest would be balata.  I grew up at the end of the balata era and really love that feel.
As far as a ball that is actually playable now I would think something like the titleist AVX or Bridgestone tour brxs would be a good starting point, depending on how you want the ball to perform, as they are very different outside of the softness. I’d lean towards the brxs because when I think super soft I think balata, and when I think balata, I think spin. I’ve grown to like firmer, lower spin balls, but have never really liked softer, lower spinning balls personally. There are a lot of soft feeling balls like the callaway super soft, that feel soft, but to me, not in a good way.  More mushy.  And I’m not going to compromise on a urethane cover.

Shafts - I’ll pick graphite and I’ll go with recoils.  Taking the vibration out makes everything feel smooth and I would say soft.  Recoils are the smoothest, softest feeling shaft I have tried.

Grips and gloves-  Im not going to comment much on these because I think this is getting the softness in the wrong way.  Im sure some of those soft Winn grips and some thicker gloves might make things feel soft, but I feel that is more just dulling feedback rather than softness coming from a good place.  The same could be said for graphite shafts I suppose, but in my mind it is different…

I completely understand, while not all my equipment choices have been to get the softest feel I have definitely found some good combinations.  I am playing PXG Gen 2 0311P irons right now.  Pair that up with a Snell MTB Black or Q-Star Tour golf ball and it is the softest feeling thuds I have ever had.  What is interesting to me is that the Gen 2 irons were supposedly the “hardest” PXG irons made, have not tried the Gen 3 or 4 so I can’t speak to that.  I have been thrilled with the Gen 2 irons and I can say there is no tinkering with irons right now.

Also to go with the soft feel party are Ping Glide 3.0 wedges, again on solid strikes with those two golf balls provides extremely solid (and soft) feel.

One other soft feel club are any modern Taylormade drivers that use twist face (M3, M4, M5, M6, SIM, SIM Max, SIM2, Sim Max 2).  I have hit all these and owned a few and they have a great thud feeling.  My swing doesn’t like twist face for whatever reason and I just can’t keep it straight or I would definitely game one of these.

Honorable mention goes to the Ping i210 irons, very soft on center strikes but not super soft if you miss the middle.  I have also had a set of PXG 0211 irons and they were not as soft as the Ping’s on center strikes in my opinion, but definitely more forgiving.

I still have a handful of balata golf balls from the late sixties that feel like marshmallows. You can hit them with any club and they’ll feel the same. They’re sitting in one of my shag bags and every so often I will hit short iron shots with them in the field behind my house. If you truly want the softest of feels, balata balls are the king in this regard.

+1 on mizuno forging

Im going to pop a scotty TeI3 in too for the putter.

no idea on grips or shafts except to say x100s and corded grips aren’t at this race.

A small forged blade will feel great on center strikes but they will rattle your bones on mishits.

Quite a few great replies, thanks!

Lots of love for Winn grips and the Wilson Duo ball. I already play the Bridgestone B XS, and I agree that it's phenomenally soft feeling. I might give a Wilson and the B RXS balls a go just to see what they're like!

I might stay away from the TopFlite Flawless Lady ball though 😉

Hey - look at my signature.. and I'm northern European. I know all too well the soul shattering feeling of an ill-struck bladed 3-iron on a winters morning 😂

But it's all made up for with the loving, warm embrace of hits on their sweet spots.
