Duct/Duck Tape as Build Up...

I currently use a mix of double sided tape and painters tape when regripping.  Double sided as buildup and painters tape as top layer to blow on grips.  When regripping for someone else I use the standard double sided and solvent method... Just throwing that out there

Now, recently I have been having some issues with my pinky and ring finger on my left (top) hand after golf due to over-gripping the club.  I have been in-between grip sizes which has been a constant struggle as I have been using standard (360 velvet) grips built up a bit and while they feel pretty good, the pain issue has been getting to me.  I would likely benefit from some softer style grips as in Winn, SS, etc but frankly I have a ton of grips in the basement and do not want to buy anymore.  I have 2 sets of nice midsize +4-ish style velvet grips (Amazon grips) that feel great but are almost 80 grams each which frankly is heavy and for me, really changes the feel of the club.

I was thinking (for MY CLUBS ONLY) about building up some of the 360 velvets to midsize with an extra wrap under the right using some white Duck/Duct tape.  The tape is thicker than painters and double sided tape.  It would add a bit of a cushion to the grip, and I could still blow the grips on and off...

1.  Has anyone used duck/duct tape as build up before?

2.  If you have, how many wraps did it take you to go from one size to the next (std. to mid).   Average size (Duck brand) for tape is 10mil thick

3.  Just wanted to say how much I have enjoyed this forum currently and over the past few years.  This club building section is the best section in here... Thanks

Mike

No never used it my self but seen some (rare) posts of others using it - so might want to try a search.

But here are some random thoughts on it:

My biggest concern would be that duct tape adhesive could potentially be a PITA to remove/clean from the shaft when it comes time to change it out.

10 mils is 0.010"  - which if accurate is not really all that much thicker than either double sided or some of the thicker single sided build up tape.

Any attempt to add build up tape is going to result in a firmer grip due to the extra stretching.  Using duct tape isn't going to change that.

Duct tape is a bad choice for build up tape.  If you live in a hot climate, it will tend to get really gooey underneath the grip and I've seen it where several layers will slide around.  Also, it is the worst to try and take off.  It never ends well for the guy who has to regrip them.

If softness is what you seek, any time you build up a grip you stretch out the rubber and the grip will feel firmer.  If you are concerned about the extra weight, that odd feeling goes away after a short while.  It becomes normal very quickly and I don't even notice it any more.  Do not add more weight to the head to get the same sw back as that is where most go wrong when they use a heavier grip.

So you guys recommend just tossing on the 75gram heavier grips and letting the feel take care of itself?

Using the larger grips - yes.  Or you can look for other options that are as big, but not quite as heavy - more options are starting to become available.   That's largely since the build up tape to get a smaller grip to the same size will typically add almost as much weight as just going with the larger grip in the first place.

But grip size is really the first step in the fitting process and the rest of the club should be build/fit around the best grip for you.

But "let the feel take care of itself?"  No.   First step after changing grip weight is to refit yourself for head weight.  Forget what the swing weight scale might say, that's the wrong tool for the job.  Instead, go to the range and hit some balls.  Use lead tape to test heavier, choke up to test lighter.  Eventually you should be able to find a good fit.  Then you can use the swing weight scale to measure and duplicate it in the rest of the set.  Usually that will be enough but in the cases where it's not, it may mean needing to find a lighter shaft since grip weight is really more (or as much) about adding to the total static weight of the shaft then it is about swing weight or head weight.

An oversize Winn weighs 51 gms.  Get one, put it on your favorite club and see if it helps with the pain.  I question that your grip pressure makes two fingers sore.  I did a lot of rough carpentry, sometimes my right forearm would get a little sore, but never just two fingers.  You may need to check in with an orthopedist.

Home Depot & Lowes carry several type of cushioned double sided tape (mounting tape). Some stickier than other (beware!). I would place a layer of painters tape on first and buildup on top of that. Only issue is most of it is 3/4"-1" wide, so you will need to spiral it.

Just a thought.

I believe it is from a combination of grip size and over gripping.  grip being too small and literally completely in my fingers and not secure enough causing me to death grip with those two fingers more.

Thanks BT.  Are you still rocking the leather grips?  How are they holding up for you.  I may just go that route and be done with everything

If you're not completely convinced that duct tape is a bad idea, I'll add my $0.02.  My extra clubs stay in my garage (yes, if they behaved well enough, they could stay inside the air conditioned house, but they're not and that's why they are serving time in the garage).  It gets hot in Texas.  It gets hot in my garage.  I noticed that there was grey goo slowly creeping its way down from the grips that had duct tape under them; the "rivers of goo" sometimes were 8" to 10" in length.  PITA to clean that stuff off if I want to give a club a reprieve and let it earn its way back into the happy bag.  And removing the tape?  I thought that if I put it on top of single sided tape that it shouldn't be a problem.  I was dead wrong.  Just don't do it.
