Hogan 1999 Apex blade question

I have a set of near mint 1999 Hogan Apex blades I am trying to sell. They are not glossy chrome, and I am trying to determine if they are raw. I contacted Golfworks and the person with whom I spoke wasn't sure, but, after I answered a couple of questions, said that they were probably chrome in a "low gloss" finish. I've never heard of a "low gloss" finish. I'm trying to determine in what finishes 1999 Hogan Apex blades were manufactured, and if there was such a thing as a "low gloss" finish that wasn't raw, how to tell the difference. I bought this set on eBay and they have no rust, but that could be because of the near mint condition. If anybody can help with this, I would certainly appreciate it. Thanks!

If they were raw, wouldn’t they have some rust, even a tiny bit, 20+ years  on?

For example, I have an old Cleveland 588 raw wedge that I never played, not once, in a closet.  It’s completely and evenly “rusted”…meaning there’d be no way to mistake it for chrome.  And it’s never even been wet or struck.

Well, when I bought them and they arrived, there was a tiny bit of rust on the faces of two of the clubs, and only two. I thought it a bit strange, since there were virtually no other marks on them. But I have bought glossy chrome clubs on eBay that came with small amounts of rust, so I just thought it was the same thing. Maybe it was. I'm primarily just trying to find out what finishes were available on the '99 Apexes, and that should give me what I need to know.

Mine are chrome + I've only ever seen chrome (that weren't intentionally stripped or re-coated, for whatever reason).  IIRC, I think back then they had a special department for pros and VIPs that would cater very specifically to build requests (beyond what was standard at the time) and a number of unique spin-offs were produced.

I owned a set a couple years ago that I sent into The Iron Factory and had rechromed and finished in a satin finish.  It would be interesting to see your set.

I originally thought that it was a satin finish, but it looks slightly darker than what I have seen as satin in other clubs. I also found a post on Golfwrx through Google that listed a set of raw 99's, which seems to confirm that they were available. But it could be that someone stripped them. I just want to know what mine are, or how to find out.

I play the 99 Apex, bought them about 10 years ago. As far as I know, the only finish available was gloss chrome. I've never heard of them being offered in a satin, low gloss or raw finish - and, if they were raw, they'd have a solid layer of rust on them.

You may be right, they may have been stripped and re-finished. If that's the case, FWIW the swing weight will not be the same as the original finish.

Someone posted that pictures would help. I've deleted the original pictures from my computer, so for sake of time if anyone wants to see the clubs, you can look at the pictures on the eBay listing at:

I appreciate all the help, guys.

Looks like someone went over them with something like Scotch-brite pads

I reported those ebay irons as "not as described."  I hate it when people pretend to have "new" clubs when they are clearly old and worn.

The previous owner has stripped the chrome finish, possibly due to some rust on the chrome. And as previously mentioned, the shafts weren't available two decades ago.

No, I sent them to The Iron Factory in Glendale, AZ and had them rechromed and satin finished.  My primary set is I play is a set of 1999 Apex blades so this was going to be my backup.  The grooves on my gamer set are still really good so I didn't see a need for this set to sit in my office display staff bag along with my persimmon wood collection gathering dust.  I wanted them to be played and enjoyed.

I'm no expert but all the original Hogans I've ever seen have ferrules with 2 red lines. I'm guessing heads have been pulled or re-shafted altogether.

Nice looking set though...

Sorry, my mistake those were the Dr's, who said they were re-finished. Just back away from the tablet late at night dummy!

These were going to be my backups so they were shafted with Nippon Modus Tour 120 stiff shafts once I got them back.
