When to move from junior irons to standard women's irons

Just looking for some general thoughts on when to transition my daughter from junior irons to standard women's irons.

She's in 7th grade and is about 5'2" tall. She takes lessons from our pro who mentioned to me that her current set (Callaway junior set recommended for juniors up to 5' tall) seemed a little short to him.

Fairly new to the game - she doesn't play competitively but she is working on her game and may want to go that direction at some point, but she really is still just getting a feel for her swing.

She is still getting taller, so I think she could handle a standard women's set - considering a set of Mavrik Max women's (light graphite shafts) from Cally pre-owned.

Anything you guys might be looking for?

Along with her height swing speed would be a determining factor. If she's hitting her driver and 5 iron to or close to the average distance for women's clubs make the switch.

At 5'2" she's only 2" shorter than the average height of an adult American woman. Statically, she should be just fine with a set of off the rack women's clubs especially since she can always choke down if they feel a bit long to her.

Weight is always the biggest issue. As her golf muscles develop it will be a lesser problem, but giving her clubs too heavy too early will hurt her swing.

My daughters are 15 and 17 now and I went through this issue with both of them. One switched before 6th grade and one not until the summer after 8th. Every child is different so there really isn't one answer, and golf muscles aren't developed in many ways other than specific training and actually swinging a golf club.

If you can find a store that has some women's clubs she might be able to hit in the simulator you can see from how she handles the club there if she is ready and with her feedback of the weight.

As alluded to the by prior post, you have to have her swing what you are considering upgrading her to so you can make sure she can handle the weight of the club. Height is starting factor but weight is even more important. Don't switch her to the ladies shafts til she can handle the weight or she will regress and maybe get frustrated and quit since struggling isn't fun, especially for a casual player like you say your daughter is (for now). Wanted to buy a set online I understand just try to find the same shaft or as similar as you can find weight wise and have her swing it in a golf store. Good Luck.

Callaway sells two versions of the Mavrik Max. The lite irons have a specified swing weight of C1 while the regular Max is specified at C4.

The older Callaway women's clubs I bought were heavy but this allowed me to cut them down by over an inch without having to add weight to the head.

I did buy the Lite version, so the 10gram difference should help. We'll see on the length, I'd rather not trim graphite shafts If I don't have to. Thanks for your insight!

I went from junior to teen clubs for my daughter.. I plan to upgrade her to womens clubs in the spring.. she is 13 and 5,6

I'm in the same position. My 6th grader is 5'1 and growing. I might wait until next spring.

What sucks for me is I have 2 girls, one lefty and one righty. No hand me downs!

Ha! Same here, except I have 3 daughters! My youngest is the lefty, so she's always going to have all "new" (to her) stuff!

What are teen clubs? I think the Mavrik Max Lite irons I've got on the way are probably the most similar thing I've seen to a step between junior and adult women clubs. For me it's going to be the length that could be an issue at 5' 2". I'll report back!
