Anyone using 46, 52, 58, 64 wedge setup?

hypergolf

Recommended Posts

I started experimenting with this wedge setup and found that it is working quite well for me. I only use 58 and 64 for partial swing or out of the bunker.

I initially thought 6 degrees would be too much gapping in the wedges but found they covered a wider range of distance, both long and short, compared to my older setup of 46, 50, 54, 58.

Just curious if anyone else is using the 46, 52, 58, 64 or similar wider gapping in wedges and having good performance around the green.

I have in the past and liked it a lot.  I tend to prefer 6* gaps because they generally provide a 15 yard gap for me, and I can manipulate ball position or backswing to hit the in between numbers.

I've thought about looking for a 64 to add to the bag for fun (and probably to my detriment) since I have room. I thought it might be at least interesting to practice with even if it doesn't get much use.

I like my gaps around 5-6° in wedges.  I think 3-4° is too close for most people especially considering the length difference in wedges is generally only 1/4".  I think the distances creep up on each other with the tight gapping, potentially making clubs redundant.

I've tried it before. Worthless for me. I can do everything with a 58 that I can with a 64.

Almost.  I've a 48* as my "weak" PW (along with a stronger lofted PW from my iron set), then a 52* gap, 58* sand, and 64* lob.

48* is strictly an approach shot club.  52* mostly is, but I'll occasionally use it for short game shots like chips or long bunker shots.  58* is a jack of all trades, and 64* is only for short bunker, chip, and pitch shots inside of 50 yards.

This setup could work great, especially if you are already playing a 46 PW..  I was thinking of swapping out my 56 and 60 for a 58 myself.  Adding a 64 into the mix as a specialty wedge could make the wedge set perfect, assuming it is not used incorrectly.  Sounds worth trying out.  I don't think 6 degree gaps are too much, but it might take some getting used to.

Just recently started experimenting with this. Removed the DI from my bag, bent my 3 iron and 4 iron one degree stronger each, and went 46-52-58-64. Been keeping track each round to see how many times I'd use the DI if I had it vs how many times I'd use my 64. So far the 64 is winning out, especially in tournment conditions (firm and fast). I use my 58* for almost all my shots around the green, but have found the 64* to come in handy for a few shots where I'd be helpless with even an open-face 58*.

I am a fairly aggressive player into the greens, and I think I am going to find that the 64* will be used more often than my DI. Been very pleased with the 64 so far but will continue to keep tracking the use and how (consistently) successful it operates. I will say it does take a fair bit of both practice and confidence to learn it, which I was not ready for but have enjoyed learning.

Funny this topic popped up I have always played 50 56 60 but went with 52 58 this year had an extra spot in the bag so added a 64.

I'm going to pick up a 46 to see how it goes against my PW a srixon zx5 Bent to 45, for some reason I have been, struggling hitting my PW no dramas with my other irons so it's time for a change.

I will say that I actually find the 64 pretty useless and it actually cost me shots the 58 can do everything with more room for error so I will most likely drop it and put a 2 iron back in for tee only shots.

On course I really don't find the larger gaps between wedges a problem I just don't seem to find myself struggling with distance gaps at all.

I don't see a 6 degree spread being all that problematic, but as for a 64 wedge mine's been in my garage for at least three years. It seemed like a good idea when I bought it, but it turned out to have no use beyond 30 yards, and with a short back swing I can use my 60 degree down to 20 yards.

Edit: Yesterday I gave my 64 degree, and a bunch of other old clubs, to the local high school golf team.

I do. Biggest reason for me falls on the courses that I play often having really small greens. I need more options wedges rather than opening up wedges which for me doesnt work with the high bounces.

I did use 46, 52, 58, and 64... but with the arrival of my new T100S irons with the pitching wedge at 44 degrees versus the 46 of my old T100's, I think I'll keep the 52, 58, and 64 and maybe play a few more partial pitching wedges if I have to. I haven't tried them out on course yet and won't get to for a few weeks because of surgery, so I might have a different plan after on-course testing rather than just some launch monitor testing.

The 6 degree gap between 46 and 64 has worked really well for me for years. I play full and partial shots with the 52, but almost exclusively partials with the 58 and 64.

Past 10 years - 47 set PW, 52 (125yd full), 58 (90yd full).

2nd half of this season - 46 (135yd), 51 (120yd), 55 (105yd), 60 (80yd).

I’ve found that the additional options leave less room for error. I also find myself getting comfortable with a particular wedge through a round leaving me with more confident approach shots.

45-52-58-64 here

64 rarely gets used but having 3W instead as my 14th club tempts me too much to hit a low percentage shot that might cost me 1-2 strokes. Whereas a 64 might save me a shot on occasion.

I am in the exact same spot. Took out my 3 iron and replaced it with 64* as my new home course has become shorter.

64* is definitely getting a lot of usage and have saved me shots which I couldn't execute with a 58* open face.

What an interesting bag setup.

I think DJ had a similar setup a couple of years ago.

This all goes back to what type of shots you're trying to achieve when you play though. There are several scenarios where a 64 degree wedge would be beneficial:

1. firm, fast & sloping greens where roll isn't your friend

2. really tall greenside bunkers

3. tight lies when you chip/pitch & opening a 58 or 60 is not confidence inspiring

That basically describes my home course. I had been playing a 46, 52, 58 set-up for the last few years, but found I wasn't needing my 3-hybrid very often. Took a flyer on a 64 wedge this year and am having fun with it.

We also have really thick green-side rough and collars. I've found the 64 to be much better that an open-face 58 for those type of shots (especially when short-sided), since you can be more aggressive and don't have to worry about the rough closing the face down as much.

One other benefit of the 64 is that my overall wedge play has improved pretty substantially since putting it in the bag. Practicing with a 64 really gives you really good feedback on your technique.

This past Season, I made the move to a two Driver Setup. I do not get along with Fairway Woods. So I carry two Drivers and two Hybrids.

One Driver, 10.5° at 46", which carries 290-295.

And one Driver, 12.0° at 44 1/2", which carries 270-275.

I do this minus the 64. Wouldn't really do anything with the 64 I can't do with my 58. Allows me to have better clubs at the top end. Having a utility iron and a hybrid is great for me as I feel more accurate with the utility off the tee and out of the rough but the hybrid flies higher and lands softer from the fairway.
