Lob Wedge with putter shaft

Recommended Posts

Had a hair brained idea, anyone ever explored putting a putter shaft in a Lob wedge, making essentially a multi purpose chipper/wedge? Thoughts, is this even feasible to do? A chipper is easy to use but limited in versatility, but perhaps with a putter shaft you could swing it like a putter, but still use it as a wedge, which is rarely used in a full swing.

Unfortunately unless the putter grip is round, don’t think it would be legal on a wedge.  You could use a jumbo grip though.

The shaft itself probably isn’t that different from most wedges to most putters in terms of weight and flex

I'd use a standard wedge grip, but wondering about using a more upright putter shaft, make it easier to swing it like a putter, feasible?

If I'm understanding you correctly, are you asking if the lob wedge can be made more upright to match a putter's lie angle? The lie angle can be changed some by bending the hosel but generally you are limited in that regard. I have bent some 304 stainless heads quite a bit however.

It's my understanding a putter shaft being shorter and more up right make it easier to swing it like a putter

Chippers usually have the loft of a 7 or 8 iron - around 38 - 40 degrees, and lie angles of a putter - 70 - 72 degrees.

I suppose what you're describing could possibly exist, but I don't recall ever seeing such an animal.

Now if someone asked me to try and build a high lofted chipping club with the lie of a putter I think I would start with a sand wedge head with a sole featuring little camber. It would have to be made of soft stainless to be able to take a bend of 8 degrees upright. From their it's just a matter of glueing in an iron shaft and cutting it to length to fit the junior golfer your working with. Slap a grip on and away you go. It could indeed be built. Heck, back in the mid 80's I built a set of irons for a golfer in a wheel chair. Using soft stainless heads I was able to flatten the lies 8 degrees.

How hard would this be do to? Any wedge you'd recommend. Kids really struggling with short game, and i'd like to give her a club that gives her some versatility until she gets her game up to snuff. I'm curious what say a 54* wedge with a 68-72* lie and a shorter shaft might do.

Diamond Tour Golf offers "Inazone" component wedge heads made of soft 304 stainless for $12 ea. Different lofts available. They can sell you a shaft and grip too. Total investment probably less than $30. Tell them what your trying to do with the specific build specs. Perhaps they can even bend the head upright for you. Or it might require seeking out an area golf shop to do the custom bending and assembly.

Would a local golf shop be able to bend it for me?

Why not just use a standard wedge and use the toe down chip with putting stroke. The lie angle becomes super upright and you grip down far enough that the trail hand is on the shaft.

That "Integra" head is 18/8 stainless. A little different than 304 and I'm not sure how bendable they are. Some of their "Inazone" heads are 304.

I'm sure if you call them they could point you in the right direction. Also likely they will build and bend to the necessary specs. They do have a custom build service department.

Get him to learn to chip with their hybrid if you want to accomplish this.  Part of me thinks the best path is to teach them properly, but on the other hand the most important thing is that they have fun.
using the hybrid to chip was a game changer for my wife.  Use it just like a putter stroke, standing tall and upright.  Very easy technique to get decent with.

I've thought about the hybrid too, eventually she'll learn properly chipping technique but i want to her to enjoy the game so she keeps wanting to learn and play. She's my nieces kid and Golf is the easiest sport to get a scholarship, she's 5'11" and athletically built so she learns how to play she'll clobber the ball, right now I want to make as many aspects of the game as simple as possible so if she chip using a stance, and swing same as putting it makes things easier.

I can get that.  Hybrid is a great way.  Have her grip it like a putter and use a putting stroke and it won’t take long to start at least having some success

Normally I'd just have the kid use the hybrid, I'm just curious how this might work, it could be a total disaster, could be great thought i'd float the idea see what everyone thinks. Or I might get the kid one of the green square edge "wedges"

Hybrids are fine for specific chip and run shots. Not versatile at all other than that. Good luck trying to get one to check up.

Late to the party, here. It is my understanding that the shafts on wedges should have more flex, not less.  Chipping like you putt is feel, not real.  Anyway, get the kid the wedge made by the Orange Whip folks.  Seen lots of teaching pros recommend it, like Stan Utley.
