Europe as “Underdogs” Geez

I am not sure how you could call the US team underdogs. They have a huge home course advantage and will go down in history as  on of the most skilled teams to lose the Ryder Cup.

The sportsbooks are heavily favoring the Americans.  EU is +240 while USA is -215.  A $100 bet on EU pays out $340 while $100 bet on USA pays out $146.  You can make some money if think the EU are really the favorites.

Amazing how many cite the OWGR rankings and apparently not understanding those are completely based on stroke play, while the Ryder Cup is match play.

USA has better golfers and home field advantage. USA is the clear favorite. Yes, Europe has won in the past, but if the 1980 US Hockey team plays USSR again, they would be the underdog every time. Reversion to mean.

Firstly a track record of a single event win every 2 years has zero to do with the next event.

 

If a baseball team had won 7 of 9 against another team in THAT YEAR, with essentially the same personnel, the team winning the 7, subject to the pitchers, would be favored to win the next.

Secondly, it amazes me how many people STILL don't realize the betting line has zero to do with who the better team is.

 

The bookies are stock brokers, not gamblers per se. They collect "commissions" on the losing bets.

 

They only care about getting EQUAL MONEY on both sides. THAT is how they make the line; "knowing" how the bettors will bet and putting the number right in the middle.

Good bet. Hard to argue with the outcome for sure.  Losing 7 of last 9 with similar  odds had me questioning.  Thrilled beyond belief!
