Three Wood Recomendations

Currently gaming MAX LS Driver SIM 2 Max 3/7W

I'm in love with the 7 but just can't seem to find my stride with the 3. I work in golf so I've hit just about everything I can but I just can't seem to find something that gives me the same feel and control as the 7W.

Would appreciate any recommendations

To put it in perspective swing speed is about 103 with the 3W and I typically hit a 5-10yd draw

My Mavrik 3w is the best I've ever had, shaft would be irrelevant to you because I don't have your SS, but it's great from the tee and the fairway.

I've hit a lot of 3woods the last 4 months. Stz is the best of anything that's come out in the last few years.

It beat

Sim ti

Sim2 ti

Sim2 max

17m2 (my previous gamer)

Tsi2 and 3

Ef ls

Ts2 and 3

Pxg gen4

I just got a pxg proto and am putting a ventus blue 8x shaft in it. That will be the final combo I put up against the stz. If it doesn't beat it then the stz is my gamer.

Don't underestimate the proper fitting tweaks, especially shortening and adding weight. Lots of people find happiness at a much shorter length than the standard 43.25". Since you have the access as well, you may want to cherry pick the right face angle if you're sensitive to that sort of thing. Taylormade woods seem to vary more than most in this category.

Built the club myself and I installed the head so the face sits a few degrees open just to suit my eye, may just need a shaft change into the RDX blue and cut some length down

Ah nice. Do you have the tools for bending the hosel or did you shim the shaft to get that?

I recently picked up the PXG proto 3 wood. Holy cow that thing is an absolute beast.

By default, it's not the longest 3 wood, it's also quite low launching. But you could move the weights around & install a high launch shaft and BOOM. Easily one of the best 3 woods I've ever owned.

pros

- forgiving on off center strikes (especially on low strikes)

- the face is deep, great for off the tee.

Find a way to hit it or take a risk on one. It's really good. Mizuno did something with stability in that 3w that just makes it want to flight straight. The CoG is back. It produces very little sidespin unless fave is way open or closed to path. I have it set in the upright lie and 1 notch low/open. That's supposedly a 2 degree open face. I play a fade and still don't hit it sideways much.

Only drawback is the ballspeed doesn't compete unless you turn the hosel to 1 notch low. You'll see that in the txg review of the club too..the video where they put it head to head with the ping g425 ls. I think mizuno lofted the 3w up and stamped it with 15*. Just speculation...

What are your goals with this 3wood?

is it to be used primarily off the tee as a back up to the driver?

Are you looking for something to be used mostly off the deck?

A combination of both?

best new model off the deck for me was the Ping G410/425

Best off the tee for me was the Mavrik, but a mini driver sounds appealing if it’s a tee club only

Best combination of tee and turf was the Cobra SZ

I went through a modified version of Howard’s DIY Driver tune up with my 3 and 5 woods. I ended up with 85g Evenflow black shafts at 42 and 41.5’ with a little lead tape added to the 3 wood.

Fitting length and weight was the most important thing for me to gain my goals.

I set out to use them primarily off the deck, but since the fit is so good now, I find myself using them off the tee with great confidence, even the shallow faced Adams Tight Lies from 2013 … YMMV

I'm back to a Mavrik 4w for a second time. It is such a good secondary tee club and off the fairway if needed its great off the deck, so much so, I'm not sure why I even sold the first one I had. If part of your struggle with your 3 wood has anything to do with getting the ball in the air (and considering you have a 7w) the 4w is worth considering for gapping and being easier to launch than a 3 wood.

How easy is it to launch off the deck?  Comparisons to g425 max or RADSPEED?

Even at 14 degrees (technically specific, it is 13.8) it is incredibly easy to launch.

Can't compare to those two tho...haven't hit either of them. Probably the only 2 major brands I haven't hit. Cobra fwys have always been super easy to launch but tend to go left for me. Ping is just always ugly to me...

In my testing I found the 425 and the Rad Speed go all high-ball harry off the tee but more of a mid low flight off the deck. Sim 2 Max for me goes sky high off the deck and mid off the tee. The flight with the 3W off the deck is practically identically to the 7W. I had found my best results so far (haven't hit the Mizzy) with the TSI3 set to 12.75 and Tensei White 75X (stock demo shaft) with a mid flight and a little lower spin (around 2.9k) and I was seeing about 240 carry 260 total both off tee and deck. Basically I got the same results both off the tee and deck with it.

Most often feel is not real. But in your case I think you're reading the situation accurately. Your misses with the 3woods are likely significantly bigger than with the 7 wood. Reason being is that the 3 woods have so much LESS LOFT and are so much LONGER in length.

The simplest solution is to:

  • Get a shaft that fits you.
  • Play a 16º or 17º head
  • Cut some length off the total length
  • Hit it FAR and STRAIGHT

I'd say get something with enough loft unless it is for the tee only. For an all round club I'd either deloft a 5 wood or loft up a 3 wood depending if your main miss is a hook or a slice.

I went from the SIM ti to a G425 lst.

I loved the SIM off the tee, which is always the case with a 3 wood.  Off the turf, I struggled.  Maybe it was the lie angle.  Anyways, got a G425 lst and I'm loving it so far.  Off the tee it's a few yards behind the SIM but off the turf it's just been really solid.

A side note, my old 3 wood was a 915 fd.  So maybe lie angle is why I didn't get along with the SIM.
