Two Clubs @ The Same Length

Just curious what your opinions are on this one. I currently have a set of Srixon ZX7's (4-PW) that are +1" over standard. I've been struggling w/ my 4 iron as of late and want to replace it with something more beefy and forgiving. My custom 5 iron length is 39" and I would like to replace my 4 iron w/ a Srixon utility iron that is also 39". Basically I'm trying to buy a utility iron off the shelf without having to go the custom route. My question is would my 5 iron be somewhat closer in distance to a 4 utility iron at the same length or does it not even matter because of the loft difference (23* vs. 25*)?

No way to truly know without hitting them side by side, but gut tells me they are going to be close ... like, real close. 2° difference at the same length could very well end up only being a 5 yard gap.

That's what my gut feeling is telling me as well. It would be impossible for me to hit both side by side so it would be a gamble for sure.

You could always buy the new one off the shelf and have the shaft from the old pulled and installed in the new.

Is it a high launch / high spin design? If so, the distance will be negligible - probably couple yards either way from current- I'm willing to say you lose a couple of yards carry

Now if it's a driving type iron- I'd expect to see a bigger yardage variances -depending on your swing characteristics

Before you do that, do some research.

1. make sure you have the same hosel bore. Some may be .355 or .370

2. they may have different BBTG (bottom bore to ground) measurements. I tried this with a club that was 1/2 over like the rest of my set, but when I put it in a utility, the BBTG was deeper by 1/2 inch, so I ended up with my 4 Utility being the same length as my 5 iron.

3. Hard to do, but check the weight of the club heads. My 4 utility at standard 4 iron length with a Modus 105s shaft was at D6 so 1/2 over, it would be around D9 ….. the rest of my set is around D4.5, so it was noticeable. I like the head, so I’m probably going to pull it and drill some material out of the hosel to get it around D4 at 1/2 over in a graphite shaft I have lying around (Tensei White 90x from a Titleist hybrid)
