PXG Gen 3 0311XP Questions

I’m 67 years old, play to a 14 from the White tees, 6200 yards is about my limit. My SS with driver is about 88 mph.

I’ve been playing Rogue X irons since their release about 4 years ago in regular flex graphite. I am in the midst of going to Senior flex throughout my bag, so I’m looking for new irons and the PXG Gen 3 0311 XP have me interested.

Here are my questions. For all the things I’ve read and heard about them, I’ve never hit or even seen them. I know the MMT shaft is a fit but that’s it.

What would be a similar sized head? I’m imagining these would be something close to the G425 or Mizuno HM’s. If they comp more to the Ping 710 than the G or HM, I think I’d pass on these. If anyone has pics comparing them to another iron, that would be great.

As far as forgiveness and distance, can anyone who’s hit these give me a comparision to other OEM offerings they have played?

Thanks in advance for your help/advice.

I like this summary by Today's Golfer:

Yes, the lofts are strong (the 7-iron is 28°), but so is the competition. The PXG was our 2021 longest mid-handicap iron (by three yards), but amazingly it also produced our smallest carry distance drop-off (eight yards or 4.3%) of the whole category (see our test results here). That means great consistency on the course, which is just what most club golfers need.

I moved to hollow body clubs about 5 years ago with the PXG Gen 1 irons.  I loved those clubs because it helped give me back some of the distance I was loosing.  I’ll be 67 next month and in that time since, I’ve had the P790 and HMB.  Both have similar forgiveness.  The HMB is shorter but much tighter dispersion.

I’m  currently playing the 0211 DC while I wait for the 2021 P790’s and PXG 0311 XP Gen 3’s to arrive.  I wasn’t planning to buy the P790’s but they gave me a great trade in.  I was told they would arrive in September, now November - ugh!

I really like PXG and decided to move up to the Gen 3’s for better feel and dispersion over the 0211’s given the reduced cost going on now.  I was fitted in the MMT shafts in regular flex. I also have a 7-G set of the 0211ST blades. GREAT clubs!  I only play them when the mood strikes me - yeah, I’m a true WRXer.

Once we get through the winter, I’ll have my 2 bags set - one mostly Taylormade Sim and the 790’s.  The other with PXG Gen 4 in driver and fairway.  Gen 3 XP in irons.

Hope this helps.  I don’t think you can go wrong if you decide on the Gen 3’s.

I had Gen 3 Ps, switched to P790 for a year and recently moved to 0211 DCs. I found the 0211 DCs to feel as good as the Gen 3 Ps but are more forgiving than either the Ps or the P790s. They are longer due to the lofts and length but I can stop them on the greens equivalently to the P790s. I'd suggest that you also consider the 0211 DCs.

I'm bummed about how strong the lofts are on the XP's.  If they were a little weaker I'd buy a set NOW.  A 42 degree PW is a non starter for me

Ping G400 Max driver w/Aldila Rogue 125 Silver
Ping G425 5 wood & hybrid
Ping G30 irons w/Recoil 95

Ping G425 irons w/Accra ICWT 2.0 95
Ping Glide wedges w/Recoil 110
Ping Redwood Anser - the "real deal!"

My stats are very close to yours, single digits swing speed low 90s and old. Instead moved from TM irons kbs regular steel, to get this, A flex MMT 60 graphite iron shafts. I am still R in my driver Diamana 60. It was my call and I was shocked the numbers supported the A flex. I have been hitting these Gen3 for a month and it is the best combination I’ve owned, though I almost went with the Aero Tech 95 shaft. I hit the 7 in a P head 150. The lightweight has taken a little adjusting and also the bounce, these things don’t dig. But they are smooth and I must say the Gen4 driver is amazingly forgiving on hits around the sweet spot. And the silver top is not the least bit distracting. Never owned pxgs before, just got sucked in at the right time by the great sale.

Why not just get the set GW as your “PW” and then leave your other wedges as is?

You can order them weaker by up to 2°. They are a forged iron.

I can bend them myself but that's not the point.  PXG irons have a ton of bounce and bending weaker adds more.  I'm not thrilled with the idea of playing a wide sole PW & GW with 14 degrees of bounce after being bent.

picked up a set of 7-PW 0311P G3's on the BST here...haven't played them yet since I have the 21 790's but know that i need some longer irons in the PXG's...pondering 6i and 7i in the 0211 DC's since the lofts are already strong...guess i should get the 0311's out and see how i hit them first, tho.
