Fighting something that just feels better..

Golf is full of little quirks, quarks and faux pas. What's right and what's not. Conventional and unconventional.

I'm 41 and had used an interlocking grip since I was 10, 2 years ago I tried overlap and liked it, last summer I started messing around with the 10 finger grip and loved it... But my mind is playing a big part in this, its an unconventional grip and people probably laugh or frown when it's seen. I want to use the 10 finger grip though, its more comfortable, I have better control, I hit the ball more solid, it's just unconventional and I think people get wrapped up in things like that. I'm a 5 handicap and some days I shoot 65 and some days I shoot 85, just depends on if everything comes together, I'm not a pro obviously..

Are there things you'd like to do or try, but you don't because their unconventional and you may be the odd man or woman there?

I use a 10 finger grip and the only time someone has ever mentioned it was a golf instructor during a lesson when he basically said if you are comfortable with that we will make it work for you.

You mean like side saddle putting ? ( eye roll )

I just noticed the other day my son is chipping and hitting short pitch shots with a 10 finger grip, he has always interlocked. I said what's up with that ? He said " just feels like I have better distance control " still hits 3\4 and full shots with his normal grip. He's a scratch player and doesn't care about vanity stuff, whatever works to shoot a lower score is the goal.

I don't remember ever noticing anybody's grip other than my own except one time that it was hard to miss.

My buddy and I playing with 2 randoms and they both hit all shots lead hand low.  Both hit it way longer and straighter than I did.

I have too many other things to worry about when I'm trying to play golf.  I always suspected most folks were in the same boat.

Never!

Forget being a sheep... if you like it do it.  As long as healthy and repeatable.  Now it also has to be effective.... easy to go down a rabbit hole and F up your solid swing you had.  But you gotta be secure in what your changing, maybe keep your toe in the water of your old technique so it doesn't die before you make a permanent change.

I putt standing straight up like Rickie or Ray Floyd... hands in close to body with a 41" putter.  Club head is way out in front so I need a putter with like a 60* lie angle.  My Seemore Giant was way too upright so I yanked the shaft myself, grinded the hole flatter and JB welded that sucker down at 65*.  Only reason I didnt go to 60* cause the putter lost its face balanced properties that low so lookin at getting a LAB putter.  I love my tweaked putter and odd technique.... Im a par golfer and putting is def my strength.... but I had to be comfortable going my own way.  The guy at Roger Dunn tells me when I was lookin for a flat putter that Im putting wrong and pros have their eyes over the ball not way back, and he was kinda a snobby doosh about it.... ya buddy tell someone who cares lol

My whole philosophy to technique is let the technique reveal itself to you as far being the best what you like.... dont jam some technique into your game cause thats what everyone else does.... doesnt mean you dont have a coach or listen and try other ideas but they have to survive your gauntlet of testing and comparison... proofs in the puddin as mother would say.  But most people dont have the balls to trust themselves and prefer to play it safe and be a sheep baa baa 🐑🐑🐑
