Mavrik Max Fairway alternative without draw bias?

SteelyDan

Recommended Posts

I love the size, shape, feel and sound of my Mavrik Max 5 wood. It sits flat and square behind the ball and the leading edge inspires confidence. Too bad it has too much draw bias for my tendencies. Any suggestions what looks, sits and performs alike but with neutral/fade bias? I am looking for a fairly big, shallow shape with a low, square leading edge.

Thanks

The mavrik subzero is a really really wonderful model.  If you Havent hit one - go hit one.

I have not, but I see the shape is rather different in a way I do not like as much.

I agree that another Mavrik, either the SZ or the regular one is your best bet. Feel is very similar across the models, just slightly different head shapes and spin characteristic, but even that can be offset quite a bit with shaft

Are the weights in the neutral configuration or the draw configuration? Set it to neutral if not. You can further neutralize it by downsizing the heavier weight - or both weights - to 2g Callaway weights and add lead tape or hot melt in the toe.

I agree that the Maverik Max is a rare fantastic fairway in from recent years. My wife loves hers.

How can I tell and change if necessary?

Use one of the tools from a driver to remove the weights and check. They say how many grams they are on the sides when you remove them.

Thx. Guess the heavier weight should sit in the back in my case?

This is a great question, OP.  I absolutely love my Mav Max 5w.  So easy to hit high bombs, but I definitely don’t need any help going left either.  As the poster above me mentioned, the STZ may be the ticket.  I have the STZ as a 3w and it’s surprisingly easy to hit off the deck.  I may consider a 5w too.  It’s got a deep face and not quite the same launch-aiding leading edge, but it sits very neutral to my eye.

to make it neutral yes. Heavier weight in the heel is draw mode

Put some lead tape on the sole along the toe and keep hitting the Mav Max.

Thanks for all the advice. Will experiment with the weights a bit. Wouldn’t mind sticking to the Mav Max if it goes straighter.

Had to think hard what STZ stands for. Mizzy woods are basically not available around here.

I’ve checked and the heavier weight was already in the back, so no progress to be made on that end.

What shaft are you playing in it?

Center of gravity impact on sidespin is very minimal in fwys. Draw bias in fwys will come from a closed face at impact. That could be face angle at address but it also could be from how the rear/forward center of gravity is affecting head delivery at impact. You may be able to do some shaft play to help with face angle...but be prepared to tinker if you go that route...
