Remy Stilson from XXIO explains what makes a great ball striker so great.

It's the equipment, PERIOD.

He’s not wrong, you know. Hogan was 5’7-5’8 with a 6’0-6’1 wingspan and he had to bend his irons and wedges really flat.

In fact, he recommended in his Power Golf book that the sole should sit dead even on the ground at address, no toe up or heel up whatsoever.

If he or Gary Player or Lee Trevino played today’s upright drivers that couldn’t be adjusted outside of a high-risk blowtorch hosel bending procedure, they wouldn’t be as good as they were back then with flatter drivers.

Back then, you could just drill another bore into the persimmon at a flatter angle but you can’t do that today.

Yes - very consistent.

Kenny Perry was another incredible ball striker. Just seemed to compress the heck out of the ball, similar to Sergio. Was a draw baller, I believe, nearly exclusively.

He's still the oldest player to lead the tour in strokes gained off the tee and approach shots combined in 2005, when he was 45.

Wondering Taylor Swift GIF

1 major and 2 Players Championship wins - Sutton did more than alright.

😅

He sure did and he has a great podcast full of good stuff. He said on his show how he probably should have chased distance though knowing what he knows now. He does a great job of combining old school and new school instruction.

I've watched one of his podcasts years ago with Nick Price, it was great. Both great players and seem like nice people.

Sutton lost form for several years in the late 80's and early 90's which he said due to not being dedicated to the game and was distracted by life.

Not many people can say they beat prime Tiger head to head in their career. Sutton sure can.

@iBanesto Is this the Hal Sutton/ Nick Price podcast episode to which you are referring?

Yup he got into horses, hunting/fishing and family life. He also said he got some bad instruction at some point in his career. He was a fairway and green machine!

You're right. I heard he tinkered with his great swing and also struggled with dealing with the expectation that he was going to be the next Golden Bear given his fast start on tour life.

This is such a great story about the Sutton family and his caddie Freddie Burns.

For anyone who wants to watch 2 great swings in their prime.

One does not go on to win 14 of 14 majors after holding the 3rd round lead.  That is Tiger Woods in his prime and a subprime Tiger Woods with a fused back and bum knee wins a 15th major in 2019.  GOAT at putting, short game and ball striking.

As Nicklaus has been asked this very question many times, his answer has been the same every time “Hogan, without a doubt”.

Jack is a consummate gentleman, very humble. His response each time is direct, and there is never any dancing around the question.
Ball striking can be looked at in different ways. There is a wide spectrum of philosophies in what a “ball striker” means to different people. At both ends of this are “hitters” and “swingers”. Both strike the ball, albeit in completely different manners.

Hogan is the classic “hitter”, whereas a Tom Purtzer (of whom I believe had the most beautiful and technically perfect swing of the modern era)….is the classic “swinger”.
What I like most about this contrast is…….if we all swung the club the exact same way……..golf would be pretty boring.

Er ma gerd!!! Thank you for posting this, could not find this for the life of me online.

I have tried to describe this sequence of events to people and I think it is hard to put into words how unbelievable that was. Stuffs it to like 3-4’ righty, then next swing almost jars it lefty. That is some next level talent.

Ask Jack Nicholas, the greatest or 2nd greatest golfer to ever play the game.  He said  the two best ball strikers that he'd ever seen were Hogan and Trevino.  Trevino never looked to where his ball was going.  He always knew it was in the center of the fairway... lol...

What was that story of Lee Trevino at a clinic.  Someone asked him how far he hit a specific iron and he said how ever far I need to.  He then proceeded to hit every iron in his bag to the same distance.
