When to hit shot when someone on another hole in your fairway??

Recommended Posts

I just played poppy hills for the first time. By far the nicest course I have ever played.

Someone on another hole had hit into our fairway. they stood at their ball but did not hit it. It appeared they were waiting for someone to clear on their hole? Problem was my group started  a little slow and we needed to keep pace. I could not hit until they were out of my way. they were maybe 40 yards in front of me. they just stood there and I started getting nervous. when I get nervous or rushed I play terrible. After quite a while they finally hit. What should he or I have done different in that situation??I felt rushed on the next couple holes because the group behind us had also been waiting at that point.

Sounds like this was a case where the other golfer didn’t display proper etiquette. My view, if I have to come onto someone else’s fairway to hit my shot, it’s on me to be cognizant of the group playing the regulation hole and adjust accordingly.  If the group is teeing off, I should wait until they all hit and then go and play my shot but again since I’m infringing, I should be working around them.

If I were you, I would’ve whistled or motioned to him to please move especially if he was just waiting to hit the shot.

Concur.  This is a good and reasonable approach.

Generally speaking the group ahead should have the right of way, even when they're visiting a wrong fairway. After all, it's pointless for you to make them wait for you only for you to end up waiting because of the delay you caused to the group(s) ahead.

Regardless of who was ahead though, there's absolutely no reason to wait for the green to clear on the fairway of another hole when someone's playing that particular hole.

Sounds like everyone has this topic covered. More experienced golfers can have very good situational awareness and know when and how to make this little dance work. Like seeing that the green has not cleared for the fairway you are on so it good timing for you to hit wayward shot well the other players wait to hit approaches etc... When in doubt though don't go out on another fairway and hold up other players- just wait off to the side out of the way/behind a tree.

As one poster mentioned if it is a golfer in-front of you that is on your fairway you give them a bit more leeway, but even this is not a big deal if people know what they are doing. For instance if I am in the wrong fairway I wait behind a tree off to the side until it is safe for me to hit and tell the other guys in my group to play ahead and keep an eye out for me when I come back. If the other three golfers keep playing it is easy for the one guy to catch up to them without interrupting pace.

2b mentions "situational awareness". That is exactly right.

HE likely could see YOUR hole was wide open and you were ready to hit. Nevertheless HE could see his target and knew he had to wait. He should have simply moved aside.

YOU, if you could see where he was hitting and could see he had to wait, should've gotten his attention, or called out signaling/asking him to move aside so you guys could hit.

If you couldn't see where he was going or why he was waiting, you should've caught his attention, with club in hand ready to hit, and given sort of a hands up to your sides and a shrug indicating "What's up ?" - he probably would've understood.

Of course if he was that close (40 yards) you probably could've called out to him just as easily "Can WE hit yet ?" If affirmative, ask him to move further(?) out of your line.

There is no such "general" rule at all.

You put your ball into someone else's fairway and you are in their line of play then if you have a sense of etiquette you err on the side of not getting in their way, and not getting on with your shot without regard to the situation.

Poppy Hills is wonderful!  BTW, when I played there earlier in the summer I managed to pop a drive over into an adjacent fairway.  I got to my ball and could have played back towards where I belonged, but a guy was coming up on his ball that was across a few yards and behind me (closer to his hole) and he would have had to wait on me.  No way was I going to make him wait for me because I was a little "readier" to go, and certainly didn't holler over to him that I had the "right of way", which of course I did not.  I let him get to his ball, he waved at me, I said, "Take your time" and smiled and I waved hello to the rest of his group (appeared to be daughter and son or son-in-law).  He hit, said "thanks" and smiled and moved on.  So if I had encountered the OP having invaded his fairway, I'd have likely waited, since I was potential cause of disrupting someone else's round.

What you should have done is told the guy you will be playing your ball while he waits and just to have a heads up. Not sure why Mr. Smart guy could not figure to move out of your way if he isnt hitting right away and you have the green light to. For me, it is proximity to the hole and whether they or you have the green light to go.

If you're invading another hole, you need to be ready to play your shot.   Make it known to the guy hanging out that you're going to hit, at that point it's on him to either move or be a possible target.

After waiting a little bit.  I’d have yelled “fore “! And teed it up.     40 yards out is close enough to say “ don’t stand on the tracks. Trains coming through “.    Inexcusable to holdup a group whole waiting for the green to clear.
