1/2 swing feedback please - starting from scratch

Recommended Posts

Been trying to get rid of some “death moves” in my swing for 15 years. (Steep/yanked transition, cupped wrist on downswing, early extension) My post history will show all the times i’ve started a post like this, lol.

Ive set out with good intentions to improve this countless times, including lessons (with Monte online, others in person, etc)  I’ll have a few good range sessions taking half swings, slow motion swings, etc. Before I know it, it’s a month later and i’m back out on the course, swinging full speed on the range, etc. before the changes are anywhere close to permanent.  Hit rock bottom yesterday when I dropped a cool 102 playing off a 9 hcp. (Formerly low single digits in college before all this crap started)

So i’m not going back to taking full swings, (unless it’s one or two between drills), or playing on the course, until I can reliably repeat some of these motions with slow, partial swings. If I have to hit 3/4 swings on the range for 2 years, i’ll do it at this point.

All that said, appreciate any feedback on the motions below on what felt like a slow, left arm parallel swing from this AMs range visit. Thanks in advance!

The video you posted that you consider a half swing looks like a nice legitimate full swing to me.

I wouldn't go on some quest to try to lengthen that swing if you're finding a lot of nice consistency with it

Thanks all. Yeah I agree the “real” is definitely longer than the “feel”. I’ve never really been an overswinger, but with a 7 iron I would probably go a little longer than this. (But not too much) Also referring to the much slower speed too when I say half swing.

That said, just wanted to make sure since this is the motion I decided to “model” over the next few months that there weren’t any glaring issues here.

Thank you for the feedback. This is a slow motion “drill” swing for me, as my full speed swing has some of those issues I mentioned in the original post. Just trying to find a baseline of something I can repeat with shorter, slower drill-like swings.

I don't have the fine eye that some others have for minute issues, but I play around scratch and have been around golf most of my life.

The swing you posted looks like a wonderful swing to work with going forward, both in length of swing as well as the fundamentals I can see.

That being said it does look a little slow and contrived as you're working with a training aid on the range, but if you bring it up to the swing speed you seem totally capable of, it looks great

Thanks very much! And what you said is spot on for what i’m looking for. Find something I can do in slow motion (this was a 120yd 7i which is my 175 club), and ingrain it until I can repeat this at full speed.

Thanks again!

I may be biased on the one potential issue I see as it is the thing I've been working on in my game, but you do look maybe a touch hunched over the ball. It seems to put you in a similar and very slightly less than ideal impact position

Just speaking mainly from looking at how modern PGA Pros address the ball, it may be worth working on getting your back ever so slightly straighter/in a more athletic position at setup

Yep…that’s a fair point. I get lazy with my posture on and off the course…. thanks!
