How to keep the elbow from flying at top of backswing?

Recommended Posts

I’ve struggled with getting my trail elbow in the correct position at the top of my backswing.

My elbow begins to fly and my swing gets longer than what I want. I’ve used a drill putting an alignment stick under my trail armpit to help with the flying part but it doesn’t seem to stick when I make an actual swing on the course.

any instruction or videos I can reference to help fix this. Picture below is where I am at and where I want to be. Thank you!

Try the ball bit in this drill (not suggesting the other bit!!!...that is for something else!)

You don't need to buy the expensive aid he is using - a small ball that fits between your forearms say in a string bag will do.

I have a smart ball and use it. I don’t see my swing staying like that though when I remove the ball

Can try keeping your right arm straighter throughout the backswing. Honestly it's not the worst flying elbow I've ever seen. If I were to guess, you just have to reconnect before you apply power to match it up better.

Mirror Vision.  I have this exact problem, the way to fix it is through video on the range, every swing, every range session.  Do this for 6 months, and it will improve.  A training aid can give you the feel but the brain will revert back once it's time to hit the ball.  You need to feel it, see it, and only after thousands of reps, the brain will re-wire itself.

The elbow really isn't very problematic, unless it creates bad shots. It just comes from some lift at the end of the backswing. If it's something you'd like to correct, the Smart Ball is fine.

Really need to see the entire swing.  There are a lot of ways to get to that position.  And I doubt just trying to keep the trail arm straight will work.   Handpath may be going way too far in on the takeaway or way too far out.  You may be not getting enough extensor action or you may get it at first and lose it.  Trail arm may be getting too high, etc.  Won't know until a video of the swing is shown.

Yep plus with just this photos it does look like the swing is a bit long and the right elbow is bent too much which could be a bigger issue that it getting a bit behind.

If I had to guess, it looks like a classic case of the hands going too far in, trail elbow getting behind him early and him reverse looping with too much trail elbow bend.

That's just my guess.  But like I said, there's plenty of vastly different ways to get there.

That’s not a flying elbow…but there is a lot of arm swing after your hip turn stops.  If you want a swing that long, your left hip needs to move more freely in the backswing.

Most elite golfers their trail hip moves the entire backswing, yours stops moving before right arm parallel.

I don’t want this long of a backswing it’s just what it has become…

So how do I fix this?

Not to quote Monte, but I would think the Nike drill - just do it.

Video yourself and make the change. Then do it again, and again, and again until it's natural. There isn't some drill that's going to make you rotate your hips more freely and shorten your arm swing.

If I could “just do it” I would, but doesn’t seem like I can at the moment

Imho

I see you flatten the shaft after p2 versus stand it upright.    Leads to need to lift to get to the top.   You recovery nicely but sequence is off by a bit and arms trail pivot in downswing swing.    Arms do appear to get pulled inside from p2 and you do get right elbow slightly behind.     The issue is slightly.   Todd drill with butt of club in stomach is a good one for sequence of arms and body.  https://www.instagram.com/p/CArLoP8llFa/

and get the butt of the club to point at least at the ball or inside of it after p2    FlattenIng the shaft where the butt points outside the ball pretty much always leads to an arm lift and and loose  of sequence.

lots of good stuff there.  Frankly it is good enough if you found  some magic pixie dust in your transition you could likely sequence your swing really well - but you aren’t doing it now so odds are against it being easy versus working to not get out of sequence in the first place.

it is a small difference but can have large impact on how one moves and how the club moves - kangjj is setting up to use the the club momentum in his favor while you are setting up to have to work against the club  (been there done that too) - you do a good job avoiding pulling steep but at a cost .  So lots of 9-3 wings at varying speeds monitoring shaft pitch and arm body sequence - get that a full swing is just a bit more turn etc.

Keep your trail arm straighter throughout the swing.  This will increase width, keep the club and hands more out in front of you, and greatly reduce the tail arm collapse / flying elbow.

You will be far better for it once you build this into your swing.

Good luck brother!

Thank you!
