How to keep the elbow from flying at top of backswing?

A lot of people deal with the proverbial "Chicken Wing."  You either know how to keep compact mechanics, or face bouts of chicken wing.  I know two (10-14hi) 50 something guys dealing with that as I type, and both been playing since their 20s.  Good luck.

Most don’t have enough range of motion to go external on the trail shoulder when the hip turn is restricted.  .  Trail hip needs to move around and behind you more to recenter your pressure at the top.

What’s the swing look like if you don’t take it back past P3? 

 

My guess is that it’s going to look outstanding. 

 

Lots of accurate assessments and suggestions already in this thread but as someone who has been struggling with something similar, I think the bottom line is that what your mind/body think is a “full swing” is just TOO far – particularly with the arms and hands. After your pivot is complete you just keep moving and lifting the arms. To feel a more synced up position, you are going to have to think you are only taking your hands back to hip high, maybe even only to your left thigh.

Yeah, I think the OP is going to have to either improve hip movement to “match” the length of his arm swing, or shorten his arm swing to match his hip movement.  I’m not sure which option is preferable though.

Here’s a good video. Important point Cogorno makes is that you aren’t necessarily in a bad position where you are currently in your backswing, provided you can get external in transition and avoid your trail elbow working behind seam line in transition leading to steep shaft, stall, flip.

Matthew Wolff is now ranked 400th golfer in the world rankings. He reminds me of John Daly. Exotic swings work for a while, but are not consistent over a long period of time.

My elbow begins to fly and my swing gets longer than what I want. I’ve used a drill putting an alignment stick under my trail armpit to help with the flying part but it doesn’t seem to stick when I make an actual swing on the course. 
 

any instruction or videos I can reference to help fix this. Picture below is where I am at and where I want to be. Thank you!

I like to put a towel under both arms and across the chest and hit 9-3 shots. Helps to stay connected and feel the turn.
