How heavy is your putter?

Recommended Posts

I know, I probably should go get a proper putter fitting.  But I keep bouncing between a few putters I bought this past year.  I feel like I can just practice and "adapt" to whichever putter.  Bur really need to lock into one of them.

The 3 putters I have (all in 35" length as I am 6'2") are:

The Cleveland blade and Odyssey mallet are both spec'd at 365g head weight.  The Sub 70 wide-blade has weights so it can be 375g-405g.

Cleveland for me has been really good, especially from close range.  Has a stiff shaft and only about 8* toe hang.

Odyssey I have some 3-8 ft misses here and there, but gets me closer from far out and feels nice with stroke lab shaft (face balanced)

Sub 70 while heavy, is pretty good near to medium, but hard to dial in from far.  But also my newest stick and need to dial in.  Face balanced as well.

I know putters have gotten heavier over the years, but just curious what you all use now, especially with longer putters that also have a more straight-ish stroke.  Thanks!

35.75" length

332g head-weight

486g total weight

6'4" with a pretty much straight back straight through stroke. Been playing around with adding ~20g to the head, but not sold on that yet.

Wow, that's light!  I think mine have a "total weight" range from 560g total to 590g (for the Sub 70 with the stock 15g weights in the head).

Lots of people feel that way regarding putters, even irons.  I had the same belief too.  Yesterday, that was true, today, not nearly as much.  It took me awhile to realized I was uninformed as to the fitting progress and design of putters and what works with my putter mechanics.  I didn't have a clue about such things as Toe hang, etc.

At the time I was playing:

Odyssey White Hot #5 Center Shafted putter at 34" then Odyssey White Hot Pro #7, 2.0, Center Shafted at 34"

In 2011, I tripped over Callaway's new putter fitting website, so went through the steps.  Though rudimentary, to my amazement it said my putting would improve using another style.  Till then, like you, I adapted to a putter, even though something kept whispering in my head, "I can do better."  Well, Callaway was right.  I bought a Scotty Monterey that fit the description and my putting improved since.

My SC is heavier than most at 360g, with 2/15g weights, D5 swing weight, 4' loft and 71' lie... Turns out the key was a Plumbing neck, medium toe flow and full offset shaft.

This is a loaded conversation, putter set ups are very personal. There’s no right or wrong answer. I have had several paid for fittings they all have pointed me in the same direction to a face balanced putter.  I have very little rotation on my stroke. They all have said the weight is a personal choice, based on feel. I feel I am an average putter, with some three putts but have a season putting stroke avg of 32.6 for the season (60 plus posted rounds) that’s down from last year at 34.2.
my set is 32.5 length, 1 degree flat, overall weight north of 600 and head weight north of 400. I have the exact numbers but probably be crucified and judged if I share them. I would lean towards a putter that is fit to you, and has some options for customization with removable weights, counter core grip if thats what you need. Then you have options.

Got an EVNROLL ER2V with a 380 gram head @ 34" length.  Heavier head makes me feel like im making better contact.

I prefer a lighter putter to a heavier one and staying light with a long build is a challenge. Maybe this one is too light though, time will tell...

Through a lot of trial and error and cash, I've gone through long/short putter set-ups (30"-36"), different head/neck styles (toe hang) and head weights.

I've found that 34" and 340-350g is my ideal set-up. For head/neck shapes, prefer a more compact anser style head shape and I can do either plumbers or flow neck.  Prefer a site dot, but also do just fine with a flange line...don't care for a line on the topline though...just doesn't suit my eye.

As much as I wanted to use an 8802 style putter (or other heal shafted putters with a ton of toe hang), it never worked for me...

Pxg operator at 33" and 355g head weight.

Pxg battle ready bat attack at 33" and 360g head weight.

I'm toying with operator at 365g with a 25g countercore weight in the grip. And bat attack at 370g with a 50g countercore in the grip.

Bot countercore weighted setups show really good potential on my putting matt. Need to get them outdoors later today.

Head weight isn't a good end all target. Where that weight is is huge. You can have 2 putters with the exact same length, shaft, grip, and headweight but they will feel very different if one has a forward CoG and the other a rear CoG.

I have a 34" Ping Ketsch that has a head weight of 355 grams, a total weight of 575 grams, and a swing weight of E-0. It has a steel shaft that weighs 120 grams. I'm using a 60-gram SuperStroke grip, plus a 40-gram Pro Lock counter weight in the butt end of the shaft.

Looking at head weight alone provides only a limited view of how a putter will feel and perform. I prefer enough total weight to have the putter feel solid in my hands, but not so much head weight that the putter feels too heavy when I swing it. The use of additional counterweighting under the grip allows me to use a light grip and still balance out the head weight enough to keep swing weight from exceeding E-0.

I finally played my first 18 with the Sub 70 005 putter this weekend.  Took a few holes to get used to it on an actual green vs my basement mat, but had 35 total putts in the round (which for me is pretty decent).  Left a few just short as well, so very happy with the heavier putter thus far.

Thanks.  I got the weight kit and put the two 20's in the front ports and kept two 5's in the rear ports.  I wanted the weight towards the blade as opposed to the back.  Was a little heavy swinging after that, but the SS 75g insert thing helped.  I also recently blacked out the white alignment line.
