Looking for a new 5 wood ……

texas_golfer

Recommended Posts

I just went from a tour edge 4 wood to a TSI2 5 wood. As a good player that’s struggled with fairway woods in the past, due to very shallow AoA, it’s been everything I’ve wanted

its great off the tee and off the deck, I’ve got the 18 degree head, turned down to 17 and the shorter shaft has made my strikes so much better. I also went heavier and stiffer in the shaft(RDX smoke black) which has helped. It’s totally replaced a typical 3 wood and is my club for 240-260 shots

I went with a Mavrik Sun Zero from CPO, 18° and it’s exactly what I’ve been looking for in a FW wood.  Great off the tee, really good if the deck and not too hard to hit and launch from either.  Plus it was super cheap, like $150 brand new.  That said, it’s a fixed hosel so if you’re looking for adjustability this isn’t it!

Bit of a weird set-up, but lately I've been going with two 5 woods: Ping G425 lofted down to 16.5, so it's essentially a 4 wood. And then a Cobra Radspeed Tour 5W, lofted up to 19. With the small head and shorter-than-typical shaft (comes stock at 41.75), the Cobra is almost like a blend between a fairway wood and a hybrid. I love them both. The Radspeed Tour 5W doesn't go quite as far as a typical 5W might but it's super easy to control, and then the G425 is long and forgiving, so the gapping and the different use cases end up working out well for me. I'd give either one my recommendation, depending on what you're looking for. In their stock settings at 17.5 degrees, the Radspeed Tour launched a bit higher and spun a little more for me, but since that depends so much on shafts, delivery, etc., I'm not sure that's even meaningful to share.

I think the G425 is the friendliest and straightest FW out there. Maybe not the absolute longest? but very easy for the 2nd shot on a long hole. The shaft is going to be the main issue. I dont like the Ping Alta CB shafts, except for the Tour shaft in a 3W. I changed out shafts for the Orange Tensei shaft and love it.

I just picked up the ST-Z 5 wood. It’s larger than most 5 woods but it’s absolute money. It has a lot of Ping consistency and forgiveness characteristics but it thankfully doesn’t look like a Ping.

I'm one of the few people who did not like the STZ 3 wood and 5 wood. Big heads but not very forgiving, and neither had much pop.

I liked the 425s OK but feel is not great and they are very much a fairway club. Not ideal off the tee with those shallow faces.

I also did not like the TSi fairways because the heads are small and I'm not crazy about glossy.

Where I landed, and I'm very happy so far, is SIM2 Max. Easy to launch but they don't balloon. Nice off the tee. Powerful crack at impact. And I LOVE the glued/fixed hosel. It makes the club feel very stable and it prevents me from endlessly tinkering with loft and lie after every range session. 😄

That's the exact shaft I have in my G425 5 wood as well as my G425 driver.  Great shaft!

I’ll second (maybe third) the TSi2.  Picked one up about 2 weeks ago after testing most everything and it’s been absolute nails on the course.

the SIM2 Max, STZ, and the Srixon were all really strong contenders

i hate Ping shafts, so I didn’t test 425 at all

If you like the Cobra you have now, you can’t go wrong with the new Radspeed line….but if you hit what you have well, don’t change it.

What would you say is the best one out right now?  Was thinking ping g425 maybe? Or maybe the new cobra radspeed? Looking for any first hand experience and opinions.  Thanks

There is no best out there right now. It's what is best for you. Gotta do the hard work to see what fits you.

I have a Callaway Speed, a Mizuno ST-Z, and a Honma TR21 - shafting around to see what fits best. It's a process. The Speed and the Honma have excellent feel, the Mizzie is more muted.

Have fun out there testing.

I’ve got all good things to say about the Radspeed fairways. I’ve got it in a 3W and like the look at address better than my SZ 5 wood. The infinity face make the face look more forgiving to my eye than the insert of the SZ.
