Palm Springs recommendations

Hi all

going to PS for the first time in November to escape the cold.  I'm there for 7 days staying at Mission Hills Villas.  I plan to play every day - 7 courses, sometimes 36.

What would be your top 7?

If you are staying at Mission Hills Villas, then you have to play the Dinah Shore course. 

 

Eagle Falls is a very fun course and either of the Desert Willow courses are good.

Desert Willow - Firecliff is better, but could be good to play both for 36 holes 

Indian Wells - they often have a 36 hole package. Both good courses. Players has grown on me over time 

PGA West Stadium - fun if you don't take yourself / the round too seriously 

La Quinta Mountain Course - nice setting, good set up 

Classic Club - was in weird condition when I played it, but have heard good things when better conditioned. Wind can be worse here vs. others as north of 10 

 

Lots of others to consider, but the above are what I know best / generally play.

I played PGA West Stadium and Nicklaus in one day and had a great time at both.  Not easy but very playable.  

 

Silver Rock is an Arnold Palmer design and I thought that was awesome too.  People I was paired with said it is La Quinta's "Muni"

In no particular order:

 

Desert Hot Springs

Taquitz Creek Legends

Classic Club

SilverRock

Desert Willow Firecliff

Indian Springs

Terra Lago South Course

Desert Willow (firecliff is better than willow, but both good)

pga west (any of them)

Be sure to check the overseeding schedule.  For example, Desert Willow's Firecliff is currently closed and reopens Oct 22.  The greens will be slow for the following week or two.  Desert Willow's Mountain View closes Nov 8 and doesn't reopen until Dec 26.  You don't give your travel dates but if you are there Nov 1 -7 and want 36, Desert Willow is a no brainer.

 

Indian Wells also has two courses and both are very good.  Highly recommended especially if you want to play 36.

 

Tee times are hard to get this time of year as most courses are currently closed.

This is important. Even though a course may be open, if it just reseeded it will probably be cart path only which can be miserable.

Leaving a week from tomorrow to stay for a week, folks have a condo and SUV, going with 3 buddies. I would prefer a different time, but folks fly out 10/30 for the winter, so we have to fight the worst of the over seeding season

pretty cheap trip for what we get, got flights for $250 back in may, free housing, no rental, and I have a full set of clubs already out there

Escena keeps coming up on ratings lists. anyone play there?

Looking at silver rock, PGA West stadium, La Quinta Mountain and country club. any thoughts on those? staying at Desert willow and have a round at fire cliff. other thoughts??

I played Escena and really enjoyed it, but have heard it can get quite windy. It's also a bit of a drive from the rest . Doesn't mean not worth playing, but something worth considering 

 

Seems like a great list of places to play. Not sure you can go wrong with some combination of those. Personally, I would play PGA West, Firecliff and Mountain course for sure, and depending on how many other rounds you have add in the others. Would also consider Indian Wells, but I may be in the minority there as others haven't mentioned it.

The open courses out here have been in great shape for most part, greens a little patchy at Lago, but Gary Player Mission Hill was great, Dunes was excellent, and the Valley course at Marriott yesterday was gorgeous. Today is our last day, running Dunes again, tee times have been scarce and not many of the best courses out here are open currently, but been a blast of a 4 man trip, perfect weather

Call before you go.  They close during the hot season and also may have serious water restrictions put on them.  A real good track and one of my favorites.
