Are tv ratings a good indicator for how popular the game is?

I've read several articles this year about how tv ratings have been up for golf including the PGA Championship and US Open. But golf ratings have been falling in general this year. Even the Masters final round was the least watched in 27 years (not including 2020). Also the the tv ratings have been garbage this summer. Is the Covid boom done or are people finally sick of the way golf is presented? The funny thing is though golf courses are more packed then ever. The tee sheets are barely open on weekends and courses in my area are offering less twilight rates. What gives?

“Popularity” as measured in participation is vastly different than as measured in entertainment. Men’s adult softball would not draw a single viewer but is popular in terms of league participation.

Edit to add: if more people are out playing it makes sense that viewership is down, the sport is on TV during times the courses are busiest.

I don't think so. The Golfers I know don't really have time to watch .. They are trying to play during their free time and busy when not..

IRT- Covid golf boom.. I've noticed that once restrictions were lifted locally that most of the new players went back to doing their thing elsewhere.. Tee times opened up and courses saw less pressure. I'm guessing that next season will be more like pre-covid golf.. which is just fine with me. 🙂

I don't think traditional TV ratings are accurate at all when it comes to measuring interest/engagement.   The media landscape is much too splintered.

Let's take the Masters as an example:  Instead of watching it live on CBS, I could stream it on their app, watch highlights on Youtube, get live updates from Yahoo sports, read internet forums, get shot-by-shot tweets etc. etc. etc.

Golf could easily be more popular than ever, and still have declining traditional TV viewership.

Good point! Apparently nielsen ratings do not account for streaming

The LPGA tour has gone to many 3 day events in order to accommodate all the supporters and sponsors who want to play with (better than) a lady pro.  Of course the pro tours, men and women, are money games so whoever puts up the cash can call the shots.

Actually, i prefer to watch the Euro golf tour on the telly.  The courses are more interesting and scenic, the players come from around the globe,  the commentators much superior to USA blabbers, and less technology. The players too seem to have more fire in the belly and relish the chance to succeed.

This I agree with.  US golf announcers seem frightened of silence.  They feel compelled to fill the air with words as much as possible.

Euro announcers come across as relaxed and without a sense of urgency to rush in with comments even when nothing needs to be said.

If I can watch golf and not have to watch it on CBS it's a win.  The Masters having it's own stream was fantastic.

The Masters app is superior to all. But I think PGA Tour Live is way better then NBC/CBS, they had every shot live at the Players and it was awesome. Limited commercials, featured groups are solid, and the announcers aren't annoying! The camera work is shoddy at times but I can live with that. I think I see more shots in an hour of PGA Tour live then I do in a entire CBS broadcast.

Agree with others, while it may be somewhat related, i don't think it's necessarily always direct

I love golf more than pretty much anyone, except of course the other lunatics on this site....And i don't enjoy watching it as much these days. The players in large part are very boring. Bryson is an exception to this and probably helps , but he isn't mainstream yet to where he's pulling in casual fans

Golf isn't Football. Without very charismatic players people won't really watch.

Thursday factoids. It's Thursday, right?

1. About the same number of people play golf in the US today as the number who played 50 years ago. But the population has increased by 100 million.

2. There were more private clubs in the 1920's than there are today.

3. China claims that golf was invented in 945 A.D. during the Song dynasty:

I have zero interest in watching golf with the exception of a few hours of the Majors during the weekend.  I would say TV ratings are not the best indicator.  Should be looking at buckets/rounds being sold.

I have zero interest in the PGA Tour outside of Majors and even then my interest is waning. I watched about 2 minutes of the RC. I would say I have watched 2 minutes of the Senior Tour, Korn Ferry(and whatever its previous names were) and college golf in total over the last 5yrs. I have generally watched all LPGA when its on but that is more hit or miss depending upon who the announcers are.

If broadcast television ratings were the sign of popularity, I think all sports would be going down.  Much less people are watching sporting events through the traditional methods.

      4. Have you ever used a L.A.B. Golf putter?
      5. Why do you want to review the MEAZZ.1 putter?
