2017 p790 vrs. 2021 p790

I have both sets.  The 2017 P790 with KBS Tour S and the 2021s with Nippon 120 Tours stiff.  Ordered the 2021s on first day of pre-order with high hopes sight unseen (lol such a golf ho)....

Honestly thought they are pretty comparable to one another - flight was a little lower with the 2021s and spin a little lower as well but that could be the shaft more than the heads.  Hitting them side by side, didn't see any real distance variation - and for me the 790s have always been a very straight club for me, meaning I feel like I really have to try and turn them one way or another to hit a fade/draw.   One thing I did notice though was that 2021s were a little clickier - with range balls anyway.

Was hoping for more but nothing that blew my socks off.  They will not be kicking my Srixon ZX5/7s combo set out of the bag and so my son will probably graduate from the 2017s to the 2021s....

My fitter stated its the same tech, 2021 is a tad slimmer which might help with the lower spin/flight mentioned above.

Short answer - No.

Medium answer - No, and if you order a new set that isn’t in stock, you’re not going to get them anyway.

Longer answer - I was fit on grass with Titleist Tour Response balls by TaylorMade. I owned the 2019 version with the same shaft (DG105 S). The only difference was grips, where the new version is clearly better. I only hit the new 7 iron.

The new version was slightly higher and spun slightly more. Left to right dispersion was similar. Carry distance was similar, but total distance was  about 3 yards less with the new version. This was the only quantifiable “advantage” to the 2021: it stops faster.

With the 2019, I could induce the “flier effect” pretty much on demand, and the newer version was less susceptible to this, which I don’t think was a coincidence.

The 2021 feels slightly different. It’s slightly “airier, clickier” for what that’s worth. My personal appearance preference is the chrome of the previous version.

The end(ish) result was that I traded in my 2019 for a 2021 set. This was in great part driven by a change in shaft preference that will be included for the new set. Unfortunately, as with many others, I don’t have them in hand, and the expected delivery date had been pushed back.

Anyone find that the longer irons with the speed slot feel/sound markedly different from the 8-GW? I found them noticably different.

I love 2019 P790 ..2021 P790 is bigger clicker and harsh feeling in sub 50deg in CT. They added and moved tungsten at the bottom. 2021 spin less but have higher descent angle vs 2017 spin more then 2021 and had lower descent angle... both did same. If you are playing in Windy course, 2017 is your friend.

My observation summary

1. 2021 are a tab bit forgiving

2. 2021 are a tab bit dead on feel

3. 2021 are a tab bit higher launch then 2017, hence harsh on link style where wind can be factor. But 2021 better in parkland.

4. No difference in distance

5. 2021 are bigger then 2017

6. 2021 cost is ridiculous.

I had the opportunity to hit the 2021 on an indoor shaft fitting yesterday with GC quad using my Truvis balls. I game some 2017 P790s in the 5-7. Top line of the 2021 smidge nicer to look at and bag candy of 2021 can't be denied but to me it was really hard indoors to  'feel' much difference in them. Perhaps a bit softer feel on the 2021 but I am pushing its subtle.

I was swinging pretty consistently 85-87 on the 7i and ballspeeds were near the same, came down to strike. Some spin deltas were likely due to changing shafts and slightly different tip profiles and how my swing was reacting.

As much as I like the eye candy, for me there is zero need for the upgrade unless I have some TM trade in bucks burning a hole in my pocket (so someone needs to buy my old P770s off BST to not tempt me!)
