There's a good field, and the new course is better than last years.  It has a lot of risk and reward holes, plus the dreaded desert for those overzealous oops shots.  Keep it in the fairway, it's a relatively easy straight forward course where a good round can be had.

As I predicted, a birdiefest.  This course has a very similar problem as TPC Summerlin.  If there is no wind the scores will be really low.  Things got considerably harder yesterday in the afternoon when the wind came up slightly.  If you set up the course harder and the wind really comes up, it becomes almost impossible.  Putting gets much harder, too.  I played in the Pro-Am one year at TPC when the wind really came up and the average pro score was 78.  My pro hit driver to one of the par 3's.  That par 3 #11 at the Summit (where Spieth, holed the pitch shot for 2) gets substantially more difficult when there is a 30 mph wind coming from left to right and the only way to hit the green is to hang it out over the water.  There is a reason they play these tournaments in October in Las Vegas.  Best weather and least wind.

Heh they should have gone off Monday and Tuesday when the wind was about 30mph sustained and 60mph gusts.

I played Casscata in those conditions. One of the most miserable rounds I've ever played lol

Oof, that's a bummer. Such a beautiful course.

I was born and raised in Las Vegas.  I played more rounds of golf in 30-50 mph conditions than I care to remember.  In one high school match we lied down behind our golf bags in the fairways and waited for the worst of it to subside.  It did teach me how to hit a shot that doesn't get higher than about 10 feet.  Very useful.

KMitchell been eating his Wheaties

He -6 through 9. 2 more guys with 31s at the turn.

Always thought Mitchell seemed so intense and not fun to be around.  But after watching him play a full round with YouTuber Garrett Clark from GoodGood that was released this week...the guy is hilarious.  Pulling for him to win.

Don't see a lot of 5 stroke leads on Fridays...

62-64 is pretty strong to start a tournament.  126 isn't the record by any stretch, but it's on the list.  JT did 123, a few guys have done 124/125...and while quite a few have done 126 it's still T4 all time and it's impressive as hell.

18 under par is also tied for third lowest to par of all time for opening two rounds.  Pat Perez hit 20 under in 2009 at the Bob Hope, Tom Lehman got to -19 back in 2001 (in Vegas somewhere), and then a few other dudes have hit 18 under.

I should add that Annika Sorenstam went 65-59 for a 20 under aggregate (not sure if that was the opening two rounds or not).

Of course our esteemed Ryder Cup Captain Steve Stricker has the aggregate record for two consecutive rounds at -21.  Dude went 61-62 on the weekend and only finished T3.

Rickie with another 66. While I almost don't want him to win this weekend - it's painful to watch dudes blow big leads - I do hope he continues to shoot low scores and gets a T2/T4 or something.

Just saw an article this morning with Rory talking about why he doesn’t think we’ll see the likes of Tiger or Vijay huge seasons.  Glowing praise for Mitchell. Who is #137 in the owgr.

“People don’t realize that,” he said. “You turn up to a PGA Tour event, like a typical event where there’s 144, 156 players and you feel like three-quarters of the field have a chance to win. I think that just sort of illustrates how deep the fields are. And it’s tough to win, right?”

McIlroy said that point hit home for him in the fourth round of the Wells Fargo, at Quail Hollow, earlier this year, when he was paired with Keith Mitchell, a one-time Tour winner who largely flies under the radar. Mitchell was unable to capitalize on his two-stroke 54-hole lead that Sunday — McIlroy ultimately won by a shot over Abraham Ancer— but that didn’t diminish McIlroy’s admiration for Mitchell’s game.

“He came out and he hits it in the left bunker on 1, hits an unbelievable 7-iron to, like, 10 feet and holes the putt,” McIlroy recalled of his partner. “People wouldn’t maybe pick a Keith Mitchell to win a tournament at the start of a week, but you play with him in a final round on a Sunday, he stopped me in my tracks. I was like, he is a hell of a player.”

Definitely one of the most unreal golf experiences I ever had, and I don't even remember the course much.  Sure, it's Fazio, and it's plush, but it is the amenities that are so "Vegas"; you just don't find those kinds of perks anywhere.  And just a little too much tequila...

It's not as easy as TPC Summerlin though, so not really seeing a super birdie fest.   But who knows, those guys are so good and the ball flies like crazy in Summerlin.

These guys are going low! Winning score might pass last weeks.
