Wedding photos on the green

I was wondering about the course perspective.

I failed to mention, these photo sessions are done in the middle of the week (or slow days) or when the bus of tourists are not scheduled to play.. I worked overseas (islands) and also here in the west coast.

My home course is also a banquet hall/event center and it hosts many wedding receptions. The 6th hole is the signature hole looking out onto a lake/nature preserve area. A few times wedding parties have gotten pictures take at the top of the hill where the tee box is. I've only run into a group once, but we waited and congratulated them.

My worry if a wedding party was taking photos on the green would be damage to the green.

It is this logic, my friends, that has our society trending towards the dung heap.

my logic? or what i’m saying the course would care about more?

I was referring to the latter - i.e. that the golf course would care more about a $50k wedding party than a daily fee golfer.

I know it makes "economic sense" but that's about the only realm where it does - and I, personally, think there's a lot more to life than economics.

Just one guy's opinion.

you're definitely not alone in your opinion.  lots of people think its not all about money.

but the owner of the course thinks it's all about money, as does the owner of pretty much every business in the world.  assume the greens fee is $100 at that course.  he needs that golfer to come back 500 times to make what the wedding brought in in one day.

or if you want to look at it a different way: isn't the biggest day of a young couple's life more important than Jim's saturday round?  in a crazy world where the money is even, i'd still defer to the wedding party.  Jim can tee it up again tomorrow if he wants to, today is their day.

all of that being said, i still this was poorly handled by the course/venue.  anyone going out for their round should have been given a heads up about the wedding and that there might be a situation where they crossed paths.  enjoy a beer at the turn on us, for any inconvenience.

Yeah man, I feel you. I know you have a point.

But, in my curmudgeonly way, I'm left questioning lots of things.

1. I don't see the underlying sense of a golf course that has to rely on weddings to remain viable. Seems like something has gotten screwed up just a bit there.

2. I also think it is a little presumptuous to made assumptions about the value of one party's experience over the other in this matter - i.e. wedding vs. golfers.

We all know that not every wedding is the joyous, "once-in-a-lifetime" experience that you have described.

Also, we don't necessarily know that Jim "can tee it up tomorrow." Perhaps Jim has terminal cancer, and this is the last round he will play before heading to hospice.

Way to many unknows there to make a blanket judgement.

3. As to the question of why anyone would want to take wedding photos "literally" on a golf course, I haven't the faintest idea. I'm not sure what golf has to do with marriage.

And seriously dude, I'm not trying to be a Richard or anything. I just enjoy debate on topics like this. I hope that my tone and responses convey that.

you're all good.  i'm enjoying the back and forth.

1.  yeah i'm not sure on this one.  i don't know golf course economics well enough to understand why they're not profitable by selling their actual product (rounds of golf).  i do know that maintenance and groundskeeping is really really expensive so i guess a lot of courses that have big, mostly empty, clubhouses and dining rooms try to maximize profits.  maybe @BNGL can chime in with some perspective on the economics of a course/club.

2.  i think we can make a reasonable assumption that when a wedding and a round of golf happen in the same place at the same time, the wedding is the more important affair.  any round of golf that would be more important than a wedding isn't being held in the same place and at the same time as a wedding.  i'm thinking of professional tours, high level amateur competitions, important qualifiers.  basically, if people are out there playing for their livelihood, it's on the course not to double book that day.

no, not every wedding is happily ever after, you're right about that.  but if you book your wedding at my course, i'm gonna do everything i can to make sure that the venue doesn't contribute in any way to your impending divorce.

if jim is dying, he'd probably have the perspective to allow the couple their moment.  if his last round ever takes 3:45 or 4:30, is it really going to matter tomorrow?

3.  i'm in full agreement here.  i love golf but standing on the green in my wedding suit isn't my idea of a memory worth capturing.

From the perspective of the club, they've invested a lot into a venue.  The club needs the ROI.  That keeps the members costs down.  The photographer isn't interested in the green itself, it's the background, beautiful green grass and trees, great site.  Bride and groom by this time are exhausted, they would get into the sand trap if asked.  These golfers, get over yourselves.

Wife and I married next to the 7th green at Great Bear in PA. The course had someone at the top of the hill stopping play (wasn't busy anyway). When we did group pictures before/after on the course we had carts and went to close holes that were unoccupied at the direction of the course management.

Stupid of the course not to have someone along with the wedding party to keep them out of the way of play, and stupid of people to be jerks about it. Such is life I guess.
