Deeper faced 3/5 wood-mostly for tee duty

I have a Ping 425Max 5 wood that I do like. It’s just the face is a little too shallow/elongated for tee shots. No issues off the turf but really want the club to be for tee duty. Courses here are short and not much need off the deck unless a duff on a par 5 tee shot.

any models come to mind?

Older favorites, tour issue jetspeed fairway woods, and OG RBZ 3 wood.  Might find them cheap on eBay as well.

Callaway X2 Hot 3 Deep.  Face was about 10% taller (the "deep" in "3 Deep") than typical 3 woods.  They made it in a 14.5*, and also made a 2-deep in 12.5*.

Can still find them on the 'bay.

Have you tried not using a tee and, or, using a very low tee height ? This should work well.

Not that you've asked but I'll just throw it out there, have you tried a Driving Iron?  If you have room in your bag, a lot of folks seem to be able to control a DI around 17-20 degrees better than a 5 wood.  Yes, it will be slightly shorter so maybe not as long, but if you can put a decent swing on it, most of them are point and shoot easy.  Off a Tee I have a Srixon ZX utility and a TMag M5 Ti 5 Wood.  With roll, the ZX can keep up with the 5 wood.  The plus though for me is that my misses with the 2 iron don't turn into huge misses like the do with my 5 wood.  Then I still have the 5 wood in the bag for longer shots into Par 5's and whatnot.

Just food for thought, otherwise, from what I've tested and seen, you can't really go wrong with TSI3 or a Sim Ti or Mizuno STZ or Srixon ZX5 or Rad Speed Big Tour for a Tee only club.

I've hit many old drivers that work as a 3 wood off the tee for me because they usually have smaller heads but deep faces (cost $70).  These drivers  provide high flight and shorter distances (for a driver but not so for a 3 wood).  They are usually very accurate.  I currently use the Cobra King 454 Comp driver as my 3 wood - the head appears small by today's standards but the face is very deep.

I actually have a ZX 20* 3 iron that I love. I don’t carry a 3 wood. I play a weird course. A lot of holes the 3 iron works awesome. Just looking almost for a backup driver if that makes sense. My 5 wood sometimes goes rounds without use. Where as the utility is used off the tee 2-4x per round. Looking for something between. Honestly I should just keep as is and stop being greedy trying to iron out 10-20 yards etc.

what shaft you have in your zx?  I had the recoil but felt it was too high. Subbed in a MMT utility and hate it. Going back to Recoil lol

TM SIM Max and SIM2 Max. Big enough footprint for confident tee shots. But still excellent from the fairway/rough. I have the 5 and 9 woods but also carry the SIM TI Rocket 3 wood and it's a phenomenal tee club. (The SIM2 version is smaller and produces more spin. The original SIM TI is my new favorite club).

Totally. This 3 wood still stands up even after all these years. I still have one with a Tour Only PX steel shaft.

So I snagged mine from a Member on here and he had a PX 6.0 .25 over standard in it.  I can hit some real just absolute pis$ missiles with it but I have to be on my game to be honest.  The shaft is pretty damn stout for me and if I don't focus on really making sure I get around on it, I am losing it to the left (I'm a lefty) every time.

On the flip side I have a ZU65 4 iron, that's probably my favorite club in my bag and has one of those ultralite Miyazaki's in it with an X flex that is point and shoot easy to hit.  I am thinking about seeing if I can have one of those installed on the 2 iron over the winter for next season.

With all that being said, I am also super intrigued by the Titleist 505 LOL so I might end up with one of those?  Maybe even the 16 degree...
