I'm in the U.S. and I used to love laying on couch on a Sunday morning, watching the final round of Euro Tour event on the Golf Channel, and listening to dulcet tones of Renton Laidlaw. So peaceful and enjoyable.

A real loss.  Just a wonderful announcer and human being.  I recall the advent of the GC and Renton on the mic for European events.

Really makes me think how many brilliant old school commentators that we had - Renton Laidlaw, Peter Allis, Ben Wright.

I remember having fond memories when I started playing golf in 2000 and was obsessed watching The Golf Channel 24/7 (when it was good back then) and loved Renton's voice announcing when the European Tour on shown, especially when he was commentating on Tiger's shots when he was dabbling on that tour back then.

 

He will be dearly missed.

Wow.  That one stings.  He was that rare combination of being both very knowledgable and a pleasure to listen to at the same time.  ET events won't be the same without him.  RIP.

Loved Renton back in the days, as has been said already.  I'm curious who was his understudy back in those days - I remember the voice in my head but it seems I don't hear it on TV anymore.  Then there was the (I think) English guy who sounded like he smoked a few packs a day but had the best bass voice for commentary I've ever heard.

He was my favorite golf announcer of all time.  I have missed him ever since he retired. RIP

Enjoyed his commentary.  Old school style is almost gone now.  Judy Rankin may be one of the last left.

Back in the early years of the '00s, I loved listening to Renton and Warren Humphries do commentary on Euro Tour broadcasts on the original Golf Channel. They were both great but Renton was in a class by himself, especially when he would go off on a tangent.

 

I posted this years ago, but one memory that has stayed in my head forever was his commentary one year at the Johnnie Walker Classic at Gleneagles. He and Warren got off-topic somewhat during a lull and began talking about whisky. Despite the sponsor being Johnnie Walker, Renton started professing his love for Highland Park, which he very matter-of-factly stated was "the best whisky". Warren chimed in that he too was a HP man. Then Renton went down memory lane describing a long overnight train ride years before with Henry Longhurst, who introduced him to HP before they proceeded to consume copious amounts of the stuff, which they followed up with an absolutely lethal Scottish breakfast. At least he resisted saying that the sponsor's product was inferior. Just hilarious.

RIP Renton Laidlaw. Like many others here I truly enjoyed his work. Just seemed to have a great demeanor.
