High and soft landing from 260-270 out.....what club to buy?

I need something that is a touch longer than my 2i, but much higher launch for the rare times I need to land a ball soft from over 250.

 

Easy answer is a 5 wood but I just have a hitting woods. Im thinking like a 16* Hybrid but will that low loft go high enough? 

 

This will almost exclusively be a deck club so that is also a factor. I can hit woods fine off a tee but off the deck is my struggle.

 

I currently have an SLDR 5 wood and M1 3hl, and they are "almost" what I am looking for...... I have hit other 5 woods but most spin more than I want and dont go further than my 2i

 

OH AND IM ALSO A LEFTY 🙂

I have been playing the sim TI 19* with a black ventus for 3 months or so. I bought it for the 235-240 gap but its in the 255+ range. 

It's got plenty of height and way more distance than I thought possible.

*It says 19*, we all know that the actual loft could be 17*

I might turn my M1 3hl all the way up and see how that works, it seems to have a much flatter flight than my SLDR 5 wood though both are lower spin.

 

Might also back down to a stiff in the wood, see if that helps my hit them better off the deck.

 

Only time in my life I can remember hitting a fairway wood well was an old R9 I had in college with a R flex V2

I have same issue, haven't gotten along with 3 woods in years. Now I swap a mini driver and a sonartec 15 hybrid. I don't know if they make any of the mini drivers in lefty but I have been shocked how easy it is to hit high off the deck (also, it will NOT go left off the deck). Goes higher than any of my recent three woods. Stock shot off the deck goes farther than you want but I can choke down and hit a sawed off spinning cut that lands pretty soft. I have the 11.5 so if you could find a higher loft one it might work better. Honestly nothing really comes down too soft from 260-270 unless you have driver SS of around 120+ and already have a high spinny ballflight. My goal from that distance is no foul balls and not having it come in so hot that it trampolines over the green into the gunch.

that would go high but I wouldn't characterize the landing as soft. You certainly won't get any roll-out though...

Maybe the new Callaway Super hybrid could be your answer. I am told it launches pretty well. Also could trying a ping G425 lst 3 wood and loft it up. It's an easy launching wood and should land soft. Another brand to try is mizuno. Their most recent woods launch really well and land fairly soft. Last option would be to grab a maverick or epic flash SZ 5 wood which will launch but should spin a bit less

A Ping G410/425 seven wood turned down one notch with a five wood shaft. I play this combo and it's exactly what you want.

If you're just looking for a club to try out, check ebay for an Adams XTD Super Hybrid.  Those clubs are long and not as big of a profile as a fairway wood in the same loft.

Finding a fairway wood that works is the only real solution here. Don’t be afraid of spin so long as it’s consistent.     I have a naturally high ball flight, but low loft hybrids still don’t give be enough easy height to hold a firm green from that range. I can do it with a 3 or 5 wood, but honestly, it’s such a low percentage shot unless there is no trouble I don’t ever really attempt it.

I have 17* hybrid that's 1* open that launches plenty high off the deck and lands soft.  Much easier to hit compared to a 5 metal for me and the icing on the cake is that it's easier to hit out of the rough as well.

Being technical about your actual question and what you mentioned as an example - a low lofted hybrid or wood of your choice paired with a higher launching shaft. You'll need to demo them to see what your launch conditions and spin rates are. You may also need to learn how to swing different to promote the shot you are trying to hit here as just a head/shaft may not do it.

 

Being realistic about it - it's really really stupid and you dont even see pros trying to reach greens from 260 out unless it's a drive-able par 4. Many qualified people will agree that if you are 260 out from a fairway that trying to reach it in 1 shot has a very low percentage and isnt worth trying to pull off.

Reminds me of a conversation my head pro was having with someone over the phone.  The person was looking for a club that would get him a yardage between 215 and 205 (he had clubs for the other yardages).  He told him the no one, party to the conversation, was that good and hung up.

pretty tough to hit it 260-270 and have it come down softly with a 3 wood.

 

Best advice would be to learn how to hit it 300yds with a 3 wood, and then use a shaft that spins too much for you

I think a 5W with the loft lowered a bit, assuming you have the clubhead speed. Or... a 3W lofted up...

 

I personally find a softer shaft (S) in my 3W to be easier to hit off the deck than any X flex shaft I've tried.

I played with a few college golfers this season who were very fast and they were using 3i ( I think, it could have been 2i) to play to those yardages... not sure why some are bagging on the OP, but some people are just fast and have incredible length..

Par 5's, I'm grabbing 3w and they grab irons.. 😂

You'd be better served learning to hit woods off the deck.  It's not that hard a skill to become proficient at.

Hardly never, but I have an open slot in the bag....

There are a few courses I play where par 5's leave me 250+ but the bigger issue is its around a corner so I need to get up over trees. I can hit my 2i that far but not that high.

 

This more of a winter boredom problem 🙂

Ill check those out, had looked into them briefly but didnt see lower lofts in lefty

If TM made the SLDR in 4 wood for lefty I'd be pretty happy. I like my 5 wood but I dont like the open face to get it down to the loft I want
