High and soft landing from 260-270 out.....what club to buy?

Its very rare I need to worry about this scenario, and I know its a lower percentage shot.

But I have an open slot in the bag, and a few holes at my local course where there isnt a ton of trouble should I not execute that shot 🙂

Look at a 7 wood as well, I picked up a pxg proto to find a 230 steep descent club and it’s been very promising so far. And the price is good at present .

The days of me hitting it 250 with a 3 wood are behind me.  And it was never high and soft unless it was on a tee.  Right now I can scorch a 3 iron about 220 but it's a bullet.  No way it's holding any green unless it is really soft.  Me and hybrids and fwy woods don't get along right now so a 3 iron is the most I use.  I do carry a 3 wood, but it holds the towel on my bag about 98% of the time.

There are a few courses I play where par 5's leave me 250+ but the bigger issue is its around a corner so I need to get up over trees. I can hit my 2i that far but not that high.

This more of a winter boredom problem 🙂

Got it. In terms of high and soft flight and playability off the turf, it doesn't get any better than the new Mizuno STZ 3 wood IMO. HIGHLY recommend. It went TOO high for me which is why I ditched it.

8th place? Im sure Im forgetting some other post I made lol

Does your 2 hybrid go a lot higher than your 3 wood or about the same?

Lefty: not sure. Guess not. Didn’t read that, sorry.

8th place: was referring to Bryson‘s Long Drive Championship endeavors, but that one flew over everyone‘s head (pun very intended).

My 2H goes a lot higher than my 3W, I love that it still carries a lot longer than my 19* 3H. It’s magical, really. Flighting it low is easy, too. Going to put it back in the bag, now that I think of it.

Maybe I should ask the question differently lol

Those of you higher SS guys who dont hit woods well, whats after your longest iron

I have a hard time understanding how you can carry a two iron that far and it not come down soft. The swing speed needed would, I assume, create enough spin to create a soft landing. Maybe you are just hitting knuckle balls somehow?

Its a trajectory thing not a spin issue. I like to hit low bullets with it 🙂

Carry is around 240 with roll out to 250 or so. I want roughly a little longer carry and little roll out, due to a higher ball flight not spin.

I would say either a 5 wood turned down a bit or a 4 wood with a high launching shaft that keeps the spin in an acceptable range. You would need something like a Tour AD DI HY shaft or something else high launching and maybe a touch weak in flex for your swing to get the height and soft landing you're looking for.

I would love to know GIR on tour from 260-270. Would it be any higher than 10%?

I'm sure it's low.

I'm not saying I'm expecting it either for myself.  There are roughly 5 holes in the various local courses I play where I would use this, it's wide open around the green, much easier to up and down from around the green than 50 yards out.

So I don't remember the last time landing a green with a 3W, if ever lol.  But honestly I had an old Adams Tight Lies ST Smart 15° with stock stiff shaft that, for me, describes the shot you're looking for - high launch, probably spinny, long enough, easy off the turf.  I remember it feeling really crisp off the face, and when switching to a new TEE CB3 was expecting more TBH, but liked the flatter shot.  The Adams "upside down" head must've had a decent amount of weight low for low CG.  Really cheap experiment available in LH on the bay!

Coming from someone who is a high swingspeed with no handicap I can honestly say you can’t answer this without a legit fitting...

At your speed - assuming you’re being 100% honest - you could have wood shafts dictate 1000+rpms and significant height. This can make a difference in tons of yards (plus standard deviation of spin) even with the same head.

As a low launch player my 3W carries about 285 at 16.5* (3800rpm-ish) and 5w goes about 258 at 21* (5000rpm-ish). I recently switched to a softer profile shaft because previously the Diamana DF shafts I had were simply spinning too little. My 5w would sometimes come off the toe with super low spin and carry in the neighborhood if 3 wood.

TLDR. if you’re serious about results at your speed you can’t shoot from the hip and look for a ‘magical’ head only. You need to find the right build through a legit fitting (shaft, loft, length, head weighting profile, etc) or it’ll be super hard to find what you want. Doing it right isn’t cheap though if you’re willing to do that.

I hear ya and agree, its more a solution looking for a problem since I have an open slot in the bag.

Plenty of other thing I should work on than worrying about one or two shots at a few courses 🙂

Thats why I dont want to sink a ton of money into it. I have the RAD tour 5 wood coming it, see if that works, if not Ill stick with my SLDR 5 wood and just practice more with it.

Maybe the answer is an other 2i driving iron, about an inch longer with a softer shaft lol

When I flush my 4W it does exactly as you described.  I nailed the green from 265 out recently: ball stopped within 12 feet or so and gave me a chance at eagle.

Flushing it isn't always that straightforward however.  Mine is a TS3 w/AV75 blue X flex.  It is an easy club to hit, but if I don't stay back, it will tend to be a pretty low shot.

I just bought a few clubs from Global Golf that fit my profile (4W or 5W, X-flex) and tried them out. I had 2 clear winners and it was pretty easy; my numbers are close to yours, maybe 10-15 yards less.  Another 4W felt like hitting a rock; it was always launching with low spin.  But my 5W is 18.75" now: where did you find a 21 degree 5W?

You are right though about a bit of a toe strike (for me, that is a symptom of not being through with my hips and relaxed with my hands)  A slight draw will roll forever with low RPM on these clubs: great if you are playing that draw, but not so hot if you are hitting into a green with trouble nearby.

Here's a timely video. I like how they ultimately filled the gap. They paired a 5 wood head with a 7 wood shaft. I did the opposite, but their approach makes a lot of sense and most likely comes with added consistency.

I have something similar (not my idea though).  4W at 1" short gives me a lot more consistency than my old 3W, which was just a beast in terms of distance but not a "hit it here" club.
