Recoil 'SmacWrap'

Does the Recoil 'SmacWrap' add any degree of stiffness to the shaft relative to the same non-SmacWrap shafts (i.e., Recoil 760 SmacWrap (currently available) vs Recoil 760 ES (now discontinued)?  Supposedly the SmacWrap cuts down on damping the vibration, so I would think it must make the shaft feel a little 'stiffer'?  Am I just thinking too much here, or is there something to that?

Can't say for sure - never tried either shaft but I think you're logic is off.   In general, the stiffer the shaft, the more vibrations are transmitted and the more you'd feel them.   Might be that way with most steel - but I doubt the relationship is that simple with composite shafts.

But in reality, dampening and stiffness are not the same thing.  Think of it the same as the the difference between the springs in your car's suspension (stiffness) and the shock absorbers (dampers).   In theory it is possible to increase dampening w/o effecting stiffness.  How successful they might have been is a different matter - which I can't answer.

Thanks for your comments, but I was thinking of the 'SmacWrap' as another laminating layer; to me, additional laminating layers adds stoutness (as evidenced by increase in weight in those models over the non-Wrap versions..  The weight of F3 760 ES non-wrap shaft = 68 gm, while the weight of the F3 760 SmacWrap = 70 gm. Also, the differencee between non-wrap 760 F3 and F2 flexes = 3-gm difference; same as difference between SmacWrap 760 F3 and F2 flexes = 2-gm.

So I don't see it as too far fetched to think the 2-gm 'heavier' weight of the SmacWrap F3 (70-gm) vs the non-Wrap 760 F3 (68-gm) would provide a similar increase in stiffness as compared to F2 and F3 flexes in both SmacWrap and non-Wrap models.

Or put it another way, the non-wrapped F3 shaft is 68 gms, the SmacWrap F2 version is 68 gams; just curious if the 'SmacWrap' is making the SmacWrap F2 (senior) shaft comparable to the non-Wrapped F3 (regular) flex.  I'm currently happy with the flex in my 760 F3's (I have a 4-iron with F2 and play that well and thought about an entire set of F2's), so the point is, if the SmacWrap increases flex stoutness 'a bit', I could easily drop down to F2 SmacWrap to get something similar to the flex to that I'm accustomed to rather than go with a bit more stouty F3 in the SmacWrap.  I know, it comes down to try it and compare them (easy if they were available locally), but I would like some technical definitive information that says it is, or is not, affecting the flex stoutness.

I've written in to the tech service guys at UST to see if they can shed any light on it.

I have played the UST Recoil ES, ESX and Smacwrap 760 & 780 all F3…some in the same heads some in different. From my experience the only difference is in the feel…the ES & ESX are very similar in feel and performance. The Smacwrap shafts feel different to me, they have less feel or feedback. They do not feel any stiffer at similar weights while the 780s did feel more stout.

I have a new one , 780 f5 , I can’t remember if these shafts are sold for individual irons or they are tipped and cut to length . Anyone know . i thought   mine was for a 3 iron I want to put it in a 4 iron any tipping ideas .

Such assumptions are not very reliable.   Unlike with steel (where the weight is some what, although not completely, proportional to the stiffness) weight of graphite shafts has very little to do with stiffness.   The two can be manipulated by the designer very independently.   That's why it's easy to have 60, 70 and even 80 gm wood shafts all with the same stiffness profile.  Or each one of those weights available in a range of different flexes from A or R to XS.   The stiffness comes predominantly from carbon fiber layers and orientation, the weight predominantly comes from the epoxy.  So it's pretty easy to add weight w/o increasing stiffness.   Even adding graphite layers doesn't necessarily add stiffness if the orientation isn't set up properly to do so.

I think the UST website will give tipping instructions, if not the GolfWorks web site gives the tipping instructions.

Update from UST-Mamiya.

The SmacWrap is material is only layered on the butt portion of the golf shaft to help reduce any unwanted vibrations, and although it adds 2-gm weight, it is not necessarily affecting overall stiffness.

In a subsequent email, UST-Mamiya said that even though the 760 SmacWrap adds a layered laminate layer on the butt end and weights a little more, it plays a bit softer than the non-Wrapped 760 version.  (they said the laminate is a material that is used is the stuff used in commercial planes to sound proof the inside of the plane compartment from noise/vibration...that's where they got the idea from).

So would that be from just differential weighting at the butt end that 'seems to play softer'? (like adding heavier grips and now the weight balance is off/different?

Not likely.  The only thing that would make the stiffness "seem" different - is if either the swing dynamics (amount of acceleration) changed or the head weight changed significantly.

  • 4 weeks later...

Hello - I was wondering the same.  Based on the SS, its seems the SmacWrap does play stiffer.

Note below:

760/780 SMACWRAP

FlexDriver Swing Speed (mph)Driver Carry (yards)

F2 = 70 -85MPH  175-215YARDS

F3= 85-95MPH    200 -240YARDS

F4= 90-105MPH  225-265YARDS

Previous 760/780

FlexDriver Swing Speed (mph)Driver Carry (yards)

F2 = 70 - 85MPH  175 - 215YARDS

F3 = 80 - 95MPH  200 - 240YARDS

The SW F3R starts at a little higher SS, than the non-SW.

I'm also in between the two flexes...

Hope this helps!
