How many Canadians are coming down after NOV 1

BIG STU

Was curious of how many of our Canadian friends are coming down to the Myrtle Beach Grand Strand area after the border opens Nov 1st? I was wondering if gas prices may halt things and if it was too late in the season. I know quite a few of the Snowbirds that visit every year.

I am not sure it will change the numbers too much for those that go down south for the winter. The border has been open for a while by air, the only change is now the land border will be open. Most of the people that I know that planned to go down south, were just going to fly if the land border did not open. The land border open makes it a bit cheaper/easier for some as they don't need to rent a car.

I was planning on a trip in Feb.. with the current testing fees.. I won't be going... I can't justify $1500 in testing for a week holiday

I assume you are talking about more than one person? If you shop around $100 each way if you are in a major centre.

150 canadian in my area for rapid test..  250 us per person in Phoenix

Times that by 3 people and I'm staying home

No testing is necessary starting (some unknown date) next month. If you're vaccinated, you can enter. If you're not vaccinated, you cannot enter even with a test.

Added: However, it seems Canada will still require a test to get back in. Walgreens drug store says the test is free and can be done at a drive through window.

If you fly a test is still needed to enter the US from any country, just if you drive you don't need a test to enter. https://www.cdc.gov/coronavirus/2019-ncov/travelers/testing-international-air-travelers.html

You are correct you need test to get back to Canada wether you drive or fly. There are different types of tests, but in general the type of test you need to get back to Canada people are charging $90-$250.

You're looking at information from July.

This was announced on Tuesday this week:

"Travellers will have to show proof that they have been fully vaccinated. Proof of vaccination verification will be part of the standard U.S. Customs and Border Protection process. Border officials will have the ability to send travellers to a secondary screening to have these documents checked, at the discretion of the officer.

Individuals who do not have proof of full COVID-19 vaccination will not be allowed to travel for non-essential purposes.

There is no requirement to show proof of a negative COVID-19 test to enter the U.S."

Source: https://finance.yahoo.com/news/canada-us-land-border-crossing-covid-19-travel-rules-restrictions-150335485.html

"The Canadian government has not announced any changes to the requirement for international travellers to show proof of a negative molecular COVID-19 test to enter Canada.

Travellers arriving by car, bus, boat, ferry or train from the U.S. must take a molecular COVID-19 test within 72 hours of entry into Canada."

The article you quoted is about the land border (right in the title of the article and refers to land and ferry throughout). I am sure it could change but the land border and flying in are being treated differently right now.

(Details from 1 day ago)

"For those flying into the U.S., travellers must have a negative Covid-19 test done within three days of travel. The Covid-19 test can be a PCR, NAAT, LAMP, or Rapid Antigen test, as long as the test is viral. In addition, the traveller must fill in a self-declaration form at the airport."

I follow this closely as I have to travel back and forth for work.

I've been travelling a bit during Covid.

The US right now is literally one of the easiest countries to get into by air, an Antigen test is all you needed and that's the cheapest test and gets results in 15 minutes. Though as mentioned you will soon likely need to be vaccinated

Covid testing by city differs. CVS and Walgreens suck because they don't guarantee results fast enough. i know people who didn't get their results back in time for their flights. You have to find smaller private clinics--or pay like 200-300US for a rapid PCR test (Canada does NOT accept antigen to get back). The airports also have places but your SOL if your flight is in the morning because you won't have time. Honestly, getting a PCR test back in time is as important as cost

Canada is stupid for not allowing antigen tests to be used when you have to be fully vaccinated to even get on the plane! It's needlessly way more complex.

All that opened recently was the land border.

No customs agent has asked me for proof of a negative antigen test yet even though they are required.

Again, getting back into Canada is harder than getting to the US.

Books could be written on our Hotel Quarantine program that ran from like January to May ~

And they would be comedies.

Try getting to the US thru the South.  I hear it's a 'gimme'.
