Best prescription sunglasses?

Recommended Posts

The majority of lifestyle sunglasses will have a 6 base curve as opposed to the more sporty frames which usually have 8 or 10 base.  Or you can look into regular eyeglass frames and many of those have a 4 base..

You can also look into lenticular lenses which allow a higher prescription into a higher base curve but it will also shrink your viewing area of the lens.

No affiliation, but I got my last pair of RX sunglasses at FramesDirect.com. They carry a lot of mid and high end frames and have good sales on a regular basis. The ones I got were Oakley Crosshairs with Black Iridium Transition lenses w/ anti-reflective coating. They had a sale on lenses and the total cost was $325. Some may say that's high, but I bought a pair of no-name frames with transition lenses at my doctors shop that were over $400, so this was a heck of a deal in my opinion.

However, the best part was when I got them and put them on. I too expected some distortion in my peripheral vision, but there was none! Perfect vision even looking out of the corner of my eye. I was amazed. Their fitting process seems odd (have to send a pic of your face with a CD below your nose), but they needed no adjustment at all when I got them.

They're definitely worth a look.

Instead of sunglasses, I bought a Michael Kors oversized women's cat eye frame and filled it with a single vision prescription at Lenscrafters.  Insurance reduced the $950 list price to $300.

XTRAactive, polarized, and anti-reflection coatings, Works better than  my prescription sunglasses because they  are  big enough to stop light from leaking around the sides of the glasses.

They work really well for tracking the ball in flight.  They fit just a little tight so they don't move around.  I can't wear them all day  which is OK because I wear other glasses at the computer.

Ask your eye doctor?

Have you ever been to an eye doctor's shop? It's basically very limited selection retail at high margin prices. I asked it here in this forum, rather than an eye doctor's shop, because people here have a very specific sporting need to be able to see without the common warping of sport sunglasses. Normal sport glasses all have curvature, and it doesn't work for golf or baseball. It's good for sailing and driving, but not this.

If your vision isn't bad enough to know about the effect I'm referring to, I'm happy for you. But go ask an eye doctor isn't at all helpful. It's not as if adults with glasses haven't been to 100 eye exams and doctors in their lives.

I haven't owned a pair of prescription sunglasses for years. My full time glasses are Transitions, in brown tint, which has better depth perception than grey or green.

I would say polarized and single focal length.

Polarized: If you have an overcast day, or are playing the last couple of holes at sunset, the glasses will let in enough light you can see clearly. A static tint can block out too much light.

Single focal length, preferably distance: Bifocals or blended lenses cause many people have trouble at set-up: For 7i and longer, the ball falls on the blend line, and people bend their neck funny so they can see clearly. This disrupts the straight axis of the spin, upon which you want to rotate.

Maui Jim glasses are trendy, but going the Lenscrafter route can save big $$.

I golf with Oakley Flak 2.0 XL with Rx lenses but if that is too much bend, I also have a sport set of simple frames I did get from my optometrist which wasn't all that expensive, from a brand called Switch. Very basic lenses that swap out with simple magnet at top, so I have smoke, yellow and clear for different light conditions.

Those wear like normal glasses to me and I use them for cycling and other things.

good luck hunting!

Am legally blind without glasses.  But see just great with them  thanx to my doctor.  Two pair of glasses, one RX sun for 400 bucks.

Looking for a good set of sport glasses that don't wrap. My rx is such that anything that bends warps what I see. I think the term is swiss clock.

I think the best I have seen is either a flat pair of Ray-Bans or I think I've seen some Maui Jims that could work.

Sports Optical in Denver does a nice job with Rx lenses. We’ve had several, with prescriptions that ranged from -8 to +2 and all worked out fine.

a lower base curve will help. Going to a 6 base lens is a good first step.

I have some Maui Jim’s and have to say I’m disappointed in the lenses. Frames are great, but the Rx is not as crisp as I expected. surprisingly, I like the lenses I got from Revant better, but their prices went up recently and they are not as good of a deal.

Something I forgot to add in my earlier post AND I don't know if others are affected this way. But I CAN NOT play golf in polarized sunglasses! It throws my depth perception off a bit and I can't get good contact on the ball. My RX sunglasses are non-polarized for that reason. I struggled with a pair for several weeks before I realized what was happening.

Fishing is another matter though.

Up until about five years ago I had a pair of single visions for golf, because with my progressives the slightest movement of my head would cause the ball to go out of focus. The progressives I got five years ago and the new pair I got this season don't do that, they've improved the technology that much. The single visions I got five years ago as well in anticipation of needing them for golf have never made it onto the course. They've got brown polarized lenses, perfect for golf if I needed them, but they're sitting unused in their case in my car.

I just went through this and had to go the exact route as you, no curvature.   Here is a thread wih my most recent post in it showng the RayBans I ended up with.  I'm thrilled with them after two weeks.

Maui Jim Perico's are excellent.  Without polarized lenses so I can read vehicles speedometers and gauges that are illuminated.

Ray Ban Clubmasters are also excellent.  I have polarized lenses on these.

Own both.  MJ stay in vehicle.  RB stay on person when out and about.

Silicone nosepads work great when sweating to prevent slippage.

This.

All this $400-$600 talk is killing me. For $400+ you could try 8-10 sets of glasses at Zenni and pick the ones you like.

In my case the $400 is primarily due to the high index lens, I require because of my strong prescription in order to keep them from looking like coke bottles😎

Its the same thing with my everyday glasses.
