Chipped a Miura 9 iron

This guy I was playing with has a full bag of Miuras, except his Scotty. He handed me my arse over 9 holes. So I grabbed his 9 iron and chipped a ball with it. A soft buttery shot that easily graced the green. I picked the ball off the grass like it was nothing. The feel off the face was nothing like I had ever felt before. Cheater!!!

That wasn't a Miura Iron. The words Miura and soft feel rarely collide in the same sentence.

Well. When you compare to other stuff it’s soft-ish.

I agree. You’re done now.  Might as welll start selling or saving.

Still not sure if he has too much time for golf or, not enough.

Will the Miura's be extended?

What will he do with those G710's?

So many questions.

They're good irons. Chipping... anything forged with no tech is better. Messing around with some Mizuno MP4 right now and chipped in with the PW (not a club I chip with normally) and had 3 or 4 come with a ball of going in and were tap in.

My thought was that you truly chipped (hidden rock) a Miura.  Other than *boohoo*...crickets.

I am a real feel player that's played soft forged club heads most of my golf life.  Even have a few old Miura wedges in my office.  Yep, they feel really nice at impact, but so do my 620 MBs.  Whether the difference is noticeable depends on the person using said club.

Unfortunately, most people can't benefit from soft buttery forged heads, as their attention to details at impact is, for all intents and purposes, nonexistent.  Most people want the ball to come off the face, hot-like.  Feel players that love forged clubs don't want hot, we want to feel as if the ball sets on the face fractionally longer than on the face of other clubs.  Example, the ball comes off Vokey face hot compared to Miura wedge.

The smaller Miura heads when used around the greens, cannot be matched by the modern, larger,(hotter) irons. It feels like a two step process with the modern clubs, but a one step operation with the Miuras. A great chipping nine iron is all business around the greens.

  • 3 weeks later...

Just picked up a Mizuno 68 to try for my chipper slot. It strongly resembles the Miura, but way more blade like. Has a S400 shaft in it. I will try it out before changing the shaft to graphite. 833801371_IMG_1951(1).jpg.4cd65b85113fa4926f4df881d65965c8.jpg

Correction, it has an S300 shaft in it. I also tried a MP30 9 iron and no good. The Mp68 9 iron is in another class when used as a chipper. It has now earned a spot in the bag. I like it so much I went ahead and regripped it.
