Help with new irons

Hi,

I'm currently playing Mizuno forged JPX EZ’s that are about 7-8 years old and am considering looking at new irons. I’m not on top of equipment at all, so not really sure where to start. Would appreciate any thoughts on where to focus my research. Some facts/thoughts to help:

I’m an 8.8 index

I wouldn’t say my ball striking is great, my wedge play and scrambling is really good and gets me out of jams.

I am 44, have some arthritis in my

hip and expect will lose ball speed progressively, but at the moment it’s about 101/102mph with Driver I think

I have a draw/hook from an inside out swing. I need all the help I can get from my iron set up. Less concerned about shaping the ball, more about forgiveness and feel

Price not a factor

Any thoughts on where to start? I’ll probably eventually get to a fitter but like to do some research in advance.

Thanks!

Take a serious look at the Srixon line of irons.  Definitely at the top end of any list of irons that just perform yet have options regardless of what your looking for performance wise. Combo set options are endless as well and flow nicely. Good luck in your search, that’s the fun part

Mizuno 921 Forgeds or possibly the MP20 MMC’s would be a pretty natural change over.  I’d suggest going and hitting both outdoors and going from there

Cobra LTDX 3W - Tensei 1K 75 TX

New Level 18* KBS Tour Prototype 105X / Cobra LTDX 5w - Tensei Black 85 TX

Artisan HM's / Custom Nike VR Pro Blades - 6.5 Project X Blackouts

Mizuno T22 Copper 50/54 - Project X Blackout 7.0 Spinners

Vokey 58 T Grind - Project X 6.5 Blackout

Artisan 0521 w/ LAGP 135  / Compass G.O.A.T  w/ LAGP135 / LegacyGoods Widebody w/ KBS One Step / Byron DH89 w/ LAGP135 / Cameron Studio 1.5 w/ UST All in

Obviously lots of good options out there these days. Ping is always a solid choice. Lots of models to find the right level of forgiveness for your game.

I recently got some i210s and can't complain about them at all. The Modus 105 shafts (one of the stock options) are definitely easy swinging.

I'm just a bit older than you have have a similar game - if slightly sharper - FWIW.

I second the Modus 105 and I am 27 playing them. My iron swing is not aggressive and this shaft has been a game changer for me. My Driver SS is around 105 as well, 11-12 Handicap.

You sound like you would be a good candidate for something like a player's distance iron, or even a game improvement iron.  You said that iron shaping is not your concern, so you might want to look at something a little bit bigger and easier to hit so you can just aim at the middle of the green or at the flag and fire away without worrying about where it is going to go.  With your swing speed and inside-out move you should probably consider something in the 95-105g shaft range as a good jumping off point, and perhaps something with a little bit of back weighting to slow down the face rotation.  KBS Tour 90/KBS Tour 105/KBS C-Taper Lite, Steelfiber 95/110, or Project X IO all immediately jump to mind here as possible good starting points that tick the bend profile and weight category you would most likely fit into.

Iron heads, well that depends on what you want to look at.  The PXG and Srixon 5 series are all good suggestions if you want something that still looks more player's in it's head shape.  If you want something with more meat on it to inspire a bit more confidence you could look at the Ping G425 (lots of positive threads on it here from some low handicap players), Mizuno Hot Metal, Titleist T300, or Cobra RadSpeed.  All of these are going to be larger, but not obnoxiously large heads, that will be a forgiveness and size step up over your EZ Forged.

PXG irons would be a good choice especially with the pricing that's in effect and availability is quick.  Also if you wanted to DTC, Sub70 would be good to look at, great quality and service.  Pings are just taking so really long right now to get so they'd be off my list since I'm not patient enough to wait 3 or 4 months or whatever the backlog is now.  Titleist T series, maybe 100S or 200.

Ping G400 max
Ping G410 5 wood
Ping G410 7 & 9 woods

PXG Gen 5 0311 P w/accra  5-gap
54* & 58* PXG Forged
PXG Operator H w/ BGT stability tour shaft or  SIK FLO C with LAGP shaft

Thank you (and everyone) for the responses, some good leads in here. While I don't know anything about the shafts you mention, you are correct in that I do need a shaft that minimizes face rotation. I recently had the Oban Devotion 7 XS shaft fitted to my driver and it's made a massive different in terms of how I can deliver the club. I'll check out some reviews of the irons you list - my friend just picked up the Hot Metals, so I'll try and check them out when I see him next. I think the 'larger but not obnixous' head is more what I'm looking for - I'm not overly concerned with looks - I just want to get more from those heel, toe or low shots, whilst trying to stablise the club a little more through the swing.

With the exception of PXG and maybe Tour Edge, you will have to wait several months for new irons because of the supply chain issues.

You should check them out.  Nice clubs at a very reasonable price - PXG 0211 and Tour Edge C721 and E721 - and you'll get them within two weeks of your order.

I would really echo what mogc60 says! I have the ZX7's in the bag right now and I love their performance/forgiveness! The ZX5's are also an amazing iron and would be able to help you a little bit more as time goes on! They have a good selection of stock shaft options too that would help you! There are plenty of great options all across the board, but I really think Srixon is one of the best steps!

Great, thanks everyone.

I got schduled for a fitting on November 1, so excited to go and hit some of these clubs. I watched a whole bunch of reviews on youtube and it looks pretty consistent with this thread in terms of the heads to consider (PXG 211, 311, G245, Hot Metals, Apex, ZX5-7).

I also saw the 2021 PXG's price has been slashed (ahead of the release of the new Gen4s), so that looks like a pretty good incentive if I hit them well..... but will try and go in with an open mind.

I grabbed a set of the 0211DC coming from a set of MP-20 HMB (think of them as like a newer version of your EZ).  I took them to the range after about 5 weeks of not swinging and the ball was dead straight no matter where I hit it on the face.  The size was surprisingly much smaller than I thought they were going to be and feel was equal to my Mizunos.  My HMBs are going to hit eBay this weekend!
