P790 iron but not as “hot”

I had a set of P790's and I get what you are saying.  I would get some low spin knucklebombs that flew the green (or at least ran through it).  I am now playing PXG 0311 P (Gen 2) irons and the spin is much more consistent and I no longer get those types of shots.  I have not hit the Gen 3 or Gen 4 version but I would imagine they would have fairly similar characteristics.

for those who felt the 790’s were too jumpy, what did you end up with?

I had a set of P790's and when I kept the grooves clean and playing out of the fairway they were fine.  The problem becomes the time your grooves are a bit dirty, and there is dew on the ground, or you are in the first cut and all of a sudden, BOOM.  No spin that flies a little farther and doesn't stop.  This coming from a high spin guy.

For me I wanted a little less spin, but not as much as the P790's pulled off.  Clubs that fit the bill in my testing that were higher spin than the P790's loft for loft, but are a little less spin than a standard type club and yet are forgiving.  P770, Cobra Forged TEC, Sub 70 699 Pro, Srixon ZX5 and ZX7.  All of these were also more forgiving for my miss, which is toe side, and sometimes thin.  The ZX5 actually spun for me the same 5 iron vs 5 iron against the ZX7, and the ZX5 4 iron spun more than the ZX7 4 iron, but the ZX5 in both launched a bit higher loft for loft as well.  Not sure how this happens, but it did for me.

T100 and T100s were both good, but higher spin, but about the same forgiveness as the P790, but much higher spin.  They were not as good for my toe side miss and they spun too much for my swing.  I hear the T200 and T300 can help on the longer irons as far as blending well together and offering more forgiveness towards the toe and a little less spin.

As always, YMMV

I would have said the same thing.  I picked up a set of Gen 2 P irons with SF fc115 when they were being phased out, and they are awesome irons.  Great deal, that can't really be replicated right now with the Gen 3 or Gen 4.  But the PXG P series is great in this genre IMHO.  Very forgiving for players' irons.

I played the 790's, cobra forged tec's, Titleist T100's and currently bag a set of Mizuno HMB's. Out of those four sets I enjoyed playing all of them except the 790's. I just didn't enjoy the feel and the faces got torn up so easily that after just a few rounds in average conditions they looked like I had spent an entire round playing solely out of bunkers with every club.

I absolutely loved the feel of the forged tec's, but the lofts were so strong that it was ruining my gapping at the shorter end of the bag. They spun enough to hold any green I've landed on which was surprising for how strong lofted they are. But it was irritating having a 25 yard gap between my pitching wedge and gap wedge

The T100’s are fantastic clubs, nice dense solid feel and plenty of spin but just a tad less forgiving than the other clubs I've listed. On my good days they were dart throwers, but on my bad days they would definitely punish me more than the others. Don't get me wrong, they are still the most forgiving club in their size range, but I wanted something I could hit even when I haven't played in a few weeks.

Recently I made the switch to a set of Mizuno HMB's from the T100's and I am very happy with them. They feel exceptionally soft, spin plenty, and the lofts aren't nearly as jacked as some of the other players distance irons out there. I gained about a half club in distance through the bag over the weaker lofted T100’s and got my ball flight into the ideal window for my swing. Also no issues with gapping like I had with the forged tec’s and 790’s. If I were you OP I would give them some serious consideration and test them out if you ever get a chance.

I played a p790/p770 combo last winter and this spring.  The hot p790 bit me a few times. The worst was a par 3 at the far end of the course that it flew and ended up sending my golf ball 400 yards down a street till it finally ended up in a yard.

I purchased pxg gen 2 0311P and sub 70 699 pro's I have now. My PXG are phenomenal but not that close to the P790. The 699 Pro on the other hand are very similar but better in every aspect.  Little better feel, just as forgiving and the same distance control every shot. I like both my PXG and 699 Pro, can't see myself getting rid of either set.

P790's bent 2d weak to blend with my 770s.  😛

they are a tad clicky but I got used to it for the benefits they provide.

If you game the full set and have higher speed, just know its a club strong and have at it, or get the new 770s...

Club champion fitting on Monday. Will be my first data test hitting srixon zx5/7. I did pick up a zx5 5 iron from a member. Just to see if I should get fit for srixon. Basically wanted to test the srixon sole on turf before committing to a fitting.  Zero and I mean zero places had a Srixon demo within 3 hours. Going out of town for work and just so happened to find a club champion in the same town lol

thinking of zx5 in 4, and 5 then zx7 in 6-AW.

I owned the 790s for 2 months and ended up with PXG 0311P. They're still in my bag!

i don't feel the 790's are too jumpy (in my hands, at least) but i am leaning toward the 0311P's...nothing i can really put my finger on but they're working reeeeaaaaallly well for me but so are the 790s.  i know this doesn't help...but look at the 0311P's

Another vote for the 0311P.  Great irons that feel fantastic.  They are bigger than the P790’s but the feeling at impact is excellent and very consistent distance.  0311T has a bit less offset in a slightly smaller package but don’t feel quite as soft as the P’s most likely due to less of the magic stuff PXG uses in the T head as compared to the P head.

More bounce in the PXG irons with slightly wider soles which may be a good thing or bad thing depending on what works for your swing.
