When to roadtrip Texas with golf?

Planning a road trip in Texas (might slip over to neighbouring states) for 2-3 weeks since my wife has talked about it the past couple of years. We live in Sweden and her 40th birthday is coming up, so thought i would surprise her with a trip. She does not play golf, but i do (+1 hcp right now) and i plan on playing in the morning since she likes to sleep in. So, when during the year is the best time to go? Is October a good month for both golf and other activities or should we go during spring/summer?

October is the prime time for turf conditions + weather down here in Central / South Texas. It will be weather decent most of Fall and Winter with occasional cold spells. Weather becomes more consistently pleasant with good turf conditions again in April through early June. After June, turf is nice, greens are grown out for summer and it becomes hot hot until late September.

Out of curiosity... Why Texas?

There's nothing wrong with Texas, and I have no doubt you'll have fun. It just seems like a random (odd if you will) place for a road trip for people coming from Sweden.

We have done a few road trips in the US and I guess after her watching all episodes of Fixer Upper on TV she wants to go to Texas. Which is fine with me, love BBQ and i am pretty sure there are some good courses to play along the way.

Thank you all for the replies, aiming at mid-October to early November trip.

I assume you will go to Waco for the Fixer Upper stuff.  If so, you wont find much good golf there.  But a little further south is Austin and San Antonio where you will find several very good courses.

Personally, Oct, Nov, Dec, March and April are the best months.   Courses are open year around but we get cold fronts in Jan and Feb that make golf uncomfortable.  May through Sept are hot so I wouldn't choose those months.

If you go to South Texas (below San Antonio-Houston, up to the border with Mexico) the weather is pretty nice for gold pretty much all fall-winter (as mentioned, the cold doesn't last long)-spring... summer you will probably suffer since it gets too hot, it's still doable, but I wouldn't recommend it for anyone not used to very hot weather (and that is probably true anywhere in Texas during the summer anyway hehe).

If you decide on a tour in the Summer, just remember to keep hydrated, wear long light colored sleeves and a nice cap to cover your face from the sun so you don't get sun-burned (not tanned, but the sun will literally burn you in a few minutes).

BTW, Texas is AMAZING so it's a very nice road trip any time of the year (just again, in summer, keep hydrated)

Just remember that the travel times between the major regions of Texas can be very long, especially if there's a big wreck or construction (or worse, both).  I'd make sure your plans are relatively flexible when going between regions.  That said, there are lots of great places to play golf in Texas and lots of great food.  If you haven't done this trip already and decide to hit D/FW, check out at least 1 of the Chef Tim Love restaurants.  They are all good and worth your time / money.
