GCQuad - Long distance connection to PC

Magnets

Recommended Posts

Heyo, I need some help understanding how the quad can connect to a PC.

I do not have a quad in hand yet but here is a run-down of what my setup would look like at the moment.

Simulator set up in my Garage.

Gaming PC is located in my office across the house.

Using remote desktop on a laptop in my garage to control my Gaming PC in my office.

so all of that is clear in my head and i have tested that it will work... but how do i connect the quad to my gaming PC across the house?

The PC is a tower and does not have a wifi card installed.

I could buy a wifi card for my tower but i am doubtful that the signal broadcast from the quad would even reach my office...

Is there a way to connect the quad over wifi to a fixed wired point on the local network?

I'm not very techie but would not a wifi booster achieve that, I've faffed around with older versions but I currently have this sort of thing in my house and it works perfectly

You're going to have to have the gaming PC on the network anyway?

The gaming PC is wired on the network with an Ethernet cable. I just don't know if the quad will be able to find the PC ore vice versa

Try the sort of booster I've suggested then, it's a very cheap test and I think they can even work as a daisy chain

I guess in theory that could work.

Attach the booster to the signal that the quad is transmitting and boost that signal instead of the wifi network signal.

in that case i would need to purchase a wifi card for my tower.

thanks for the idea!

I'm still interested though if there is a solution where i dont have to buy a wifi card

The quad has an ethernet port, I wonder if you could setup a mesh network and run the cord to one of the satellites. The other question is how do you get the video signal from the PC back to the simulator room?

for the video signal i'm using remote desktop on a laptop in my garage and then the laptop outputs to the projector over HDMI

I am not familiar with mesh networks, how would that work differently than the wifi extender method?

An extender creates an additional network and essentially just repeats a signal to your main network. A mesh network is singular, you basically connect to which ever unit has the best signal and the various units communicate with each other on a dedicated channel (wireless or wired). I have an orbi system and you can plug 4x hard wires into each satellite.  Over-all wifi speed will be better for all of your devices. Is your laptop connecting to the remote desktop via wifi as well?

Your best bet in terms of getting a good answer would be to go to Golfsimulatorforums. Connecting the Quad via Wifi requires a dedicated signal or something along those lines. Can also connect via USB C or ethernet. I'm currently using USB C but will look into Ethernet so I can use POE and run only 1 cable.

Interesting, I didn't see anything in my manual that you can power it via POE

Your PC is connected via ethernet, so if you get a wifi card that would be the dedicated connection, since your quad isn't moving around much and you seem to have good wifi in your garage, the extender might work fine. The second wifi connection is needed if you want to use the wirelessly connect to both the quad and the internet for FSX use.

ok, interesting so it needs a dedicated input.

maybe ill price out a cat5 run but there is a point where its just cheaper to buy a dedicated PC for my garage 😓

Was just going to mention this. You're making it more complicated then it has to be. Just buy a Mini-Form-Factor PC and hardwire it in. Finding used or a refurbed Dell 7050 isn't too expensive at this point.

Update: My BLP just works!

Got it today and it talks to my PC on the local network no problem. Just showed up immediately when i installed the FSX subscription software.

Only thing i had to kinda jerry-rig was connecting my BLP to my WiFi network. The antennae in the BLP is hot garbage(expected) so I took an old router and set it up in bridge mode and hard wired the BLP to that router.

Works like a charm!

thanks for the suggestions all!
