Is there an app that automatically detects and replays swings?

I took a lesson for the first time in forever recently and Swing Catalyst was set up to automatically replay my last swing.  No manual intervention necessary.  I simply swung, and then the TV in front of me would automatically show me the replay.

Does anyone know of a less expensive alternative that does the same thing?

Thanks!

I think it's Apple only. I use it on an iPad 4. I use the free version.

  • 2 months later...

Hi,
I am also looking for an app to record my swing but preferably one with an auto detect function so it records the swings automatically.

I have been trying Swing Profile but it seems I need to go to a paid version to continue keeping all my recorded swings.  Therefore I prefer to make sure I buy the best app and not just the one I was using for free 🙂

I know OnForm as well and it comes nearly at the same price.
Any advice on which one I should get?

Thanks!

On PC you can use Kinovea. It's free and the recording is based on impact sound so all you need is a 10$ microphone close to the hitting area.

This is the ticket.  It's a little bit of a pain in the butt to get everything setup - but if you have a decent PC - you can buy a couple of $85 Chinese webcams of AliExpress (I went with ELP with a OV4689 sensor) - and have an amazing setup.

I got everything dialed over the weekend - and am shocked that I didn't do this sooner.  So, SO good.

Can you share some videos to see quality?

For me, it's not really about the quality of video.  My old iPhone has better video quality for sure.  It's about having multiple angles instantly and automatically reviewable - frame by frame.

I don't have enough light to freeze the club yet (some big bulbs on order).

I don't have enough space to swing anything longer than a 6i.

I don't have enough space to have zero distortion lenses (meaning there's certainly a little fisheye).

Say, can you elaborate a bit more on this and answer some questions?  Could you potentially take some pictures on how you physically set this up and post them?

I assume you have two webcams are arranged for face on and down the line views.  Then there is a microphone sitting on the hitting mat.

1.  The webcam you mentioned is USB attached, so you are running some kind of usb cable extender to attach it to the pc?

2. How or what did you mount the webcam to obtain the appropriate positioning?  Some kind of tripod?

3. You mentioned the impact triggers the recording.  How does that actually work since the swing is basically over at impact?  What am I missed here?

4. Is there a section in the Kinovea documentation that explains how to take the three inputs are synch them up in the software?

I am sure there are a bunch of other questions I will encounter, but would appreciate any insight you can provide.

Thanks

I tried a ton of apps (MirrorVision for a while, Hudl, Swing Profile, SlowMo) - and they're all good for their specific functions (though I wasn't able to get SwingProfile working due to space constraints).  What I wanted was something similar to the multi-view Swing Catalyst setup I'd tried at a coaches place.

1. Yes. Amazon. Cheap

2. Yes. Amazon. Cheap (though I also used a less cheap Bosch laser level for alignment)

3. Delay settings in the software. It continuously records and the trigger says "save 1.2 seconds before the audio marker of the 2 second total length you've defined" (you can set the time depending on how much you want to capture)

4. There are a lot of threads on getting set up w/ Kinovea.  Some on the golf sim forum, some on Kinovea's site specifically.  There's one titled "2021-primer-on-dual-high-speed-video-recording-of-a-golf-swing" on golf sim which is up to date (some others are old and reference prior versions which did not have the audio trigger or ability to run multiple instances).

This guy's vid shows what's possible with these inexpensive cameras (though eventually he upgraded)

The (potentially better) alternative is just to buy Swing Catalyst home edition - but this works for now.

Is mirror vision ever going to put out a android version

Don't hold your breath.

Video capture APIs for Android are a disaster to work with and there're so many devices, it's practically impossible for a small dev shop to properly build and test for them all.
