Mizuno: Anyone switch from JPX 921 Tour to 921 Forged or vice versa?

I’ve played and was fitted for all 3.  The tours, forged and the mmc’s.   Tours felt fine and looked the best but were also the least forgiving on toe side contact, which is my miss.  Forged felt great and we’re definitely forgiving but I struggled to control the ball flight and wasnt a huge fan of how they felt.  MMC’s we’re the ticket… felt amazing and were pretty forgiving.   I’d suggest you go hit all three and see what you prefer.  The forged heads definitely have some forgiveness built in that the tours do not.

I like the look of the new 223, i feel like it's a legitimate half way between a tour cavity and game improvement. Are you still playing the 919 tours?

Nope I’m not in the tours anymore, played them for a year.  Currently in the MP20 MMC’s.

I'm currently playing 900 forged and I'm thinking its time to upgrade, I could use a little help in off center hits but I hit them pretty good

Are the MP20 MMC's in the same ballpark as far as forgiveness?

I also like the look of the 223's....I can't wait to see these

Not enough forgiveness on the 900 forged? I can't imagine there is much difference between them and the 921

plenty of forgiveness.

I was just wondering on the comparison with the MP20 MMC

I found the MMC’s as forgiving as the 921 Forged’s.  MMC’s just felt softer to me on pure strikes

did you play better with the mmc vs the tour?

Minimally.  My handicap improved after I switched but by a negligible amount.

Currently playing the tours but interested in the forged for forgiveness, I would love to hear your thoughts

I opted to get a combo set of 4-6 in the Forged and 7-PW in the Tours and have had no regrets!  Mizuno adjusted the lofts so there was a consistent 4* difference through the set.

I’ve got 4-5 forged, 6-Gw tour. Thinking I should convert to all forged but not sure.

  • 1 year later...

I picked up a set of 921 forged last year and played them a fair amount last summer  and now into this summer.   Index is 12-15 for reference.

I did pick up quite a lot of distance compared to my previous EXTREMELY old irons.  I love the feel of these and generally I am quite happy with forgiveness.  I have been making some improvements in my swing, perhaps a bit more shaft lean at impact then previously, combined with better shallowing; but really the new irons simply launch the ball significantly further, by probably 20 yards on average compared to before, while feeling really really good with the forged face.

I am having some problems with distance control now compared to my EXTREMELY old irons, not withstanding the fact that I can now hit 160-170 with my 7 iron and potentially stick a green...whereas previously I was having to use a 5i for that shot.  The 8i is my favorite club now, hitting 150-160.   But the distance is quite varied with each club compared to my old clubs.  My old clubs simply could not hit far at all.  now I can hit far...or sometimes not... and that includes even when I make good contact...just by whether or not I deloft the club more or less, or shallow out right and generate club head speed, etc...it can make a huge difference in distance for each club.. much more so then my previous, extremely old irons, which were simply not capable of striking far at all...but at least they were more consistent.

Plus I have a big gap between 125-140...  can't seem to get the PW to launch nearly as far as 9i and especially the 8i.

Plus with 7i,6i,5i, I have a really hard time sticking the green...notwithstanding that I can hit them way further than my old irons....they go really far and the 7i goes plenty hi...but the 6i,5i don't go high and I don't know the spin because i don't have access to a launch monitor, but I'm definitely having a lot of problems sticking the green from anything over about 155-160 yards...  It's great they can go far and everything, but I do need to stick some of those 180-200 yard shots....and having a really hard time with these irons.  combined with the gap around 125-140 due to the fact that the PW, and to certain degree the 9i, does not seem to have nearly the launching distance as the 8i+

Anyway, I'm not exactly sure whether there are some adjustments I can make in my swing to adapt to these or if I should consider different irons, like the tours, despite being less forgiving and perhaps not launching as far with optimal strikes...perhaps they will ultimately be a bit more consistent with distances (excluding mis hits), and perhaps more spin, but I'm curious what some others might think about this.

my 8i and 7i really send the ball high and far to the point it almost takes your breath away, with a nice draw, I get lots of positive comments from other golfers...  They are just really a joy to strike...but damn my distances are way off half the time, usually too long, which means my gaps is more like 125-150.  Not a good place to have a gap.
