Looking for advice on best paint for a putter? Every time I use paint fill purchased from EBay it comes out not looking very good, blotchy, chips easily, any advice on best paint to use for painting a putter so it comes out smooth and professional??

Testors from hobby lobby are tough to beat.  I did buy a set of acrylic paint pens from eBay that have worked well for me as well.  The testors bottles seem to keep better over time though.

Tamiya Acrylic is great if you have nice deep stamps or engraving. It's a bit thinner so sits in the cavity and not hard to wipe off.

If you have a wider and shallow engraving/stamp then an enamel paint like Testors works well as it's a bit thicker. I've found it very frustrating using acrylic paint in that so I'm going to get some quality enamel paint.

The most important thing is prep, wipe the area with a paint thinner before application, don't touch the area with your fingers and should be good.

If you're just looking to touch up the text nail polish works great.  I use it (Hard as Nails specifically) on all my irons and putters and durability is excellent.  Just be sure to fully remove all prior paint first.  I swab several times with Acetone to soften the paint and then take a miniature screwdriver to scrape the paint out.  Rinse thoroughly, let dry a couple hours and apply paint.  Done it this way for years.

Thanks everyone. To be more specific, I have a Newport Detour with a copper insert. The back of the insert is Teryllium style and I want to paint the copper part black. I’ve tried with paint fill I bought on EBay but it chips off easy and it doesn’t look the same as the black paint used on the rest of the putter which is smoother and looks more durable. Pictures included.

For that just use black nail polish, the brush will make your life easier.

Bit different route, but you could get some Gun Blue from Walmart and rub it on, will dye the copper a real dark color, rub enough on and it will blacken the copper.

I rubbed some on mine very lightly to "force" some patina

Thanks for the suggestion, I like that look. My only issue is doing that without touching or ruining the white teryllium dots 😕 ...Think I'm going to try the nail polish method.

Ah, well this is a different issue entirely. Have you tried a black spray like Krylon? Maybe tape everything else off first then spray? Not sure it would give a much better result given some of the putters I've seen it done to, but at least better than this.

Due to it being a different material, texture, sheen etc...no black touch up paint will match the putter head's factory black finish.

Gun blue does nothing to the paint, don't worry about it doing anything to the white dots

The money you put into it that putter I'd send the insert back in to get a more permanent black finish on it.

Seeing what you’re doing I would take the insert out and have the back of the insert cerakoted. After that’s done, refill the dots with white paint.

@John Wenger for what you are trying to do this is probably your best option. Either that or send it off to someone and have it professionally done.

Unfortunately, I don't see any way you could simply paint that section black and have it look good or match up exactly with the color of the putter.

Most paints don’t adhere well to copper without properly prepping the copper surface (especially acrylics) and, even then, it’s prone to chipping and buckling.  You can Google prepping copper surfaces but it would be virtually impossible without damaging the dots. They’d probably need to be repainted, as well. As someone who does a lot of work on their wedges, I can tell you that that’s a lot of detail to attempt in a very small area.
