7 wood shaft weight

My 5 wood is shorter than standard with weight added to the head, and I use a 9-X. If I played a 7 wood it would have the same shaft.

Mine was pre-owned. UST ProForce V2HL - 52g from what I can find. Shaft has been cut 1" and has a Tour Series JMX grip. No idea what it plays at haha but I've always been interested in trying heavier shafts.

I find I can go up in 5g increments from driver and be fine. I do like lower torque in my 7 wood shaft than I care about in my driver shaft. I’ve been sticking with old reliable because it works — a 75g Aldila RIP Phenom that has sub 3.0 torque. It feels stiffer and tighter than a lot of 7 wood shafts. The 7 wood takes the place of a hybrid for me and I want to feel like the shaft is helping me hit a very controlled shot.

For those of you that play a 7 wood, what shafts are you playing in them? Are they in the 70 or 80 gram weight range? ? Thanks

Its a question of what fits you, so take a look at this chart and you have a better idea than asking what others is using.

I’ve got the Tensei Pro Orange 80g in my 3 wood and 5 wood, 90g in the 7 wood.

I switch between 13.5 3 woods and 15 degree models depending on the course, 5 wood is pretty much always in the bag and 7 wood is in rotation with a utility iron that has the 100g Tensei Pro Orange hybrid shaft.

The 7 wood is an amazing club, but if I’m playing on a windy day or at links style courses it stays at home and the utility iron comes out.

I’m building up a callaway UW and was curious about the TPO 90 TX, with how much you’ve butt trimmed it for a 7 wood, is it still counterbalanced or has that been minimized some?

I’ve got mine tipped 1.5 inches and butt trimmed from there.

I seem to get on really well with that soft handle, stiff tip profile, so that was my number 1 priority, the counterbalance part is benefit for me with how I like to build my clubs.

I was lucky to get a “raw” tour head so that I could add a bunch of hotmelt to, so my swing weight is right where I want it to be with the Pro Orange.

What length Morry? Is it a Heavenwood 7 or a short 7?  I cut my shafts down a bit, I prefer control and found a with my 7w 10 or so grams different from the driver felt a bit light. I could make it work but a heavier shaft seems to help smooth me temp on it a bit. Easy to experiment with some lead tape on shaft.

thinking 42"

have a tz6 50 m4 in driver at 45" - that is 51 grams.....

so ...thinking 66g would be sweetspot

thoughts?

I think that is a good place to start for sure. Some other fitters may chime in on their mental data base on what they have seen when working with higher lofted fairways and how their customers reacted to more or less shaft weight.

I would not be afraid to try a  70g class of shaft (which may weigh 66 or 78, all depends on what shaft, flex etc... 🙂

Hit my 7W tonight with an 80 gram shaft and it was perfect.
