Disastrous start to attempt at arm locking.

I ordered a 40" ER11v Midlock Mallet from Evnroll and I tried it out yesterday.  It worked pretty well from longer distances but I had horrible trouble with short putts.  Everything was going right and my playing partners said I was lining up right of the hole.  It felt really awkward and there was no smoothness to my stroke.   Any suggestions or thoughts before I send this back to Evnroll as I only have 14 days to get my money back.

I have tried armlock twice. I was either making everything or couldn’t hit the side of a barn. The more I practiced alignment and the stroke the better it was. I unfortunately don’t have the time to dedicate to it to make it work consistently.  Utilizing a line on the ball helped immensely, especially on short putts.

Even rolls huge huge huge huge ( did I say huge ?) offset messes with a lot of peoples eyes and alignment.

trying say a sik model with plumbers neck or ever a flowneck two ball mallet version from odyssey will look much different ( better ) at address to some.   I don’t know how anyone uses that much offset .   Go to the store ( if you can ) and try other armlocks and you’ll see what I’m saying

IME you either fall in love with or hate a putter from day one. I wouldn't try to force the issue.

Armlock was not for me but I was most sucessful when I did two things, little to no knee bend (I felt more bend at the waist), and I was stacked behind my left arm which was dead straight up and down. Key for me was to really feel the stroke more in my shoulders thank my hands.

I would also check that the grip was installed with correct alignment, and loft and lie adjustment is very important.

It was really, really, tough to get used to for me. I bailed because I am too lazy. Lol

Head shape & offset play a huge part in alignment, with alignment aids, lie (I believe), and loft all playing a somewhat smaller roll as well.

If you can get those sorted, then armlock is definitely worth a good look.

FWIW, I armlock when playing lefty, but putt totally normal when playing righty.  It all comes down to fit and comfort.

I am also new to armlock, two rounds in and about 2 - 1 hour sessions of practice before those rounds.  I would suggest that you go pracitce just to find the best ball position to allow a good roll on the ball.  With an armlock, that would also be dependent on the loft angle of the shaft (not sure what to call that but the angle forward lean or back lean to obtain the correct putter head loft for your set up.)  After that, lie angle is very important.  I think that is where some people have trouble lining up the putt as the lie angle may be too upright or not upright enough, compared to what are used to with your previous putter.

My putter has a rather large surface area on the bottom so once I stand it up, I fit my stance and arm in to the putter so that he angle of the shaft, thus loft on the face stays consistent.  Lining up the grip and putting it in line with my forum gives me my stance and distance to the ball.  It works very well in giving me a consistent set up at address each time but I also fitted for the putter.

After that, I look at the hole when putting long putts, on short putts I look at the ball and pull the trigger. So far so good, looking forward to conitnue to work with it as I think it really stablizes the stroke and reduces pushes and pulls from face manipulation on bad strokes.

Try cross hand armlock. That's how I do it and it feels a lot more natural since you can get your shoulders a bit more level. It also allows you to secure the shaft into your wrist/forearm better.

It has been described to me that loft and lie angle are even more important for armlock.

It sounds like your misses right on short putts is directly related to your loft and lie.

I was also advised to order my armlock uncut to dial in the length better with actual use.

Armlock is going to take some practice before you see decent results, if tinkering around with all the different variables both in your stance and putter setup isn’t of interest, might be best to get your money back within the 14 days.

I used an armlock putter this year and have completely fallen in love with it.  It was a DIY conversion project that I tinkered with for the better course of a month before getting it 'right'.  I found it was critical that I could fit the putter to my stroke.  Variables like length, weight, loft, and lie angle are extremely important to make it work.  I tried three different lengths and I bet I made small adjustments to loft and lie based on feel multiple times per day for about a week.

I also found a need to make some adjustments to my stroke.  Figuring out ball position, how far forward I press my hands, and how upright I stand took some adjustments as well compared to my previous stroke.  It took me perhaps a week to feel comfortable.  Longer to get a solid feel for distance control on lag putts.

To me it sounds like a fitting problem.  Once I got mine dialed in it really helped me.

Played my first round using armlock and was more comfortable than I thought I would be. Lag putts didn't seem to be a problem, although I could see where uphill putts could be slightly more challenging.

Ball way forward in your stance, like in the middle of your left foot. Slightly open stance and then I run the putter up the thumb side of my arm, not the middle. That seems to get my lie angle and alignment better

    • Sony Open Pics from January 11, 2022 Part 1
I was able to get out to the Sony Open today to take a few pics.  I guess due to Covid precautions they kept the spectators pretty far from the players.  Also due to camera restrictions they've put in place, I wasn't able to bring the big lens like I normally do. Hopefully they'll ease up on the ropes and I'll be able to get more pics tomorrow!
