How are both my spin and launch angle so impossibly high with my driver?

During my last SkyTrak session I had nearly a 17* launch angle with over 3700rpm of spin on my driver. I thought these two would be inversely proportional, so I’m not sure why they are both so bad. I hit a nice, controlled fade and generally make contact in the center of the club. I know my swing path is out to in, but the side spin isn’t ridiculous. What conditions generally produce these results?

How much loft on your Mavrik?

The shots with higher efficiency (PTI) are better, spin-wise.

Next time put some foot powder on the face and pay attention to impact location and corresponding spin rate.

The two biggest factors to consider will be loft and impact location. If hitting a little higher on the face leads to shots that are too high and/or balloon, you may need to go down in loft a bit.

if the loft is already somewhat low (8.5, 9.5) it may be the case that there isn’t a whole lot you can do without some swing work.

Have you tried changing your swing path and see what happens?

I know its easier to say than doing it, but I'm on the same journey with good results... It's worth the effort, but you'll have to commit to change your swing, then these numbers will be different and you can see what's the best shaft for your driver...

I think that’s the ultimate goal. I’ve been using Monte’s Broom Force since it came out, and it’s really helped my driver. Right now my miss is still both ways, so I’m trying to get that to a more consistent draw (or at least a push).

Yes, as I said I'm on the same journey, my tendency was to control the shot trying hard to hit the fairway. But that means shorter distances with the driver, -and similar numbers to yours, high spin, high launch, not much of side spin, but the result is a short controlled cut-.

Now I'm hitting it longer, probably not the draw I'm looking for but it's not the short cut it was before. I haven't tried the launch monitor again, but I can tell by looking at the ballflight that launch angle and spin have gone down, and I have increased distance...

Good luck with that! Golf is fun! 🙂

If you are swinging out to in, might I suggest giving up on playing a draw, and instead learn to love the fade?   BTDT.  Once you embrace the fade, I think life will get easier in terms of misses.

Well I'd love to love the fade, but in my case I was hitting short cuts and not a 'powerful fade'. There's a huge difference...

(not sure if the OP has the same results though, I'm just assuming...)

Yeah to make it work it has to be a reasonable fade, like 10-15 yards average curve, with a dispersion of 0 (straight ball) to say 30 yards.  When I was doing that, I became very confident in aiming down the left fairway edge.  I also went to lower loft to counteract the extra spin from the cut face.  That got me back to a good normal distance.

THEN I switched to a draw driver and I’m back to hitting basically straight balls, aiming down the middle.    I had moved to a course that was just too tight to be playing that fade off every tee.    Now I’m at another course, it’s wide open and a lot of holes favor a fade.  So I’m going to start trying the driver that faded and see how it goes.  Point being, you can learn to like a fade, if you get it working well.   It’s really the natural match for an out to in swing.

When I ditched the out to in path , this same problem for me went totally away.  So much so that I had to change shafts to have enough spin to keep it in the air for optimum carry.  Neutralize the path , and make sure contact is center.  Mine hovered above center. More loft up there.  Equals more launch.  Think “ pick it off the tee “ a good shot will leave the tee in the ground a lot of times.

My biggest issue now is the occasional pull hook. I don’t dare aim down the left side just because that potential one ball per round OB (8 of my club’s holes have OB down the left). I’m hoping that by trying to draw the ball I can end up basically straight or with a baby draw. I love the fade with my irons, though!

I think 80s may have hit on it. Angle of attack.

Been there done that.

I used to hit similar numbers to you. High launch and HIGH spin. The "formula" for distance is high launch LOW spin.

A salesman/instructor some 8 or so years ago watched me hit a driver into the launch monitor. As usual it was launching high but spinning close to 4,000.

He turned on his cameras and took a look. I was moving my upper body towards the target. This caused my driver to trail and hit down on the ball. Added to that I played the ball back towards the middle of my stance.

Only way I could control the ball at all was to use a lot of wrist turning to square up the club head. Otherwise ? Fore right !!! Angle of attack ? Don't know but it had to be downwards a fair bit.

He had me keep my head back behind the ball, move the ball up a bit and BOOM. That was that. Teed high it still launched high, about 17* but the spin rate immediately dropped almost in half to the low 2,000s.

Now that may not be YOUR problem but you might want to take a look.

Good luck. 👍
