I have to tell someone this…

And if a club is member owned?  There really isn't much of a difference.  Whether it's personal property or a business, I don't see the word charity in there.  A business is owned by *somebody*.  And that owner is selling a product, which in this case, is a golf course to which they will have ample access for the premium they are paying.  This kind of stuff hurts that value proposition.

If you paid for something, you have the right to decide how it is used.  If you paid for a membership that said no public play is allowed, you have a right to not be happy with public play.

It's the attitude of "why can't I have these things as well you should let me have them" that really stuck in my craw.

I mean, I don't fully disagree with you. I just think your example is cretinous.

Interesting. Was pretty sure they only allowed accompanied guest?

It could depend on time of year. I know of a few places that allow unaccompanied, but not during peak season and not on weekends during their fringe season, but do allow them out of season. For e.g. playing unaccompanied on Long Island in October will fly at most of the places there, but that changes if you try to go during the summer. Places have been even more stringent since the onset of COVID.

I don’t think I would break off a friendship because he snuck into a private club.

You said you have been embarrassed by them a lot times. "Ehhh…it’s ok. I’m embarrassed by them a lot of times as well. But, they are still my friends."  They impersonated a highly respected pro to gain access. I wonder if he would find it funny. Why don't you call him and ask how he feels about it? At least they paid.

If they were kids I could understand it.

I’ve definitely been embarrassed by some of my friends for a lot worse. I guess to each his own for ending friendships. I’m a pretty fiercely loyal guy.

Exactly what I said.  This is not a big deal.  Who really got hurt in this situation.  Not one person.

For everyone that hates this, its seems that they would rather keep everyone that cant afford this or that beneath them.  God for bid someone who cant afford a $100K initiation fee gets onto their course and pays for the round.  They must have stole food out of your childrens mouth doing this.

I don't think that is the point at all.  It has nothing to do with attitude.  It's all about having a course with limited play.  That's a lot of what you pay for.

This is so much different. While I don't agree with the guys who scammed their way on to the course in the original post, you are comparing a business vs a home/personal property. If someone got onto my club this way I legit wouldn't care the very least bit.

Maybe not for one person.  Or a foursome.  Or two foursomes.  But at some point the limited play club you paid to join would be visibly harmed.

Scamming is stealing and harms the club.  One time may not be measurable but it will if it increases.

Yeah this is something that would PO membership WAY more than club staff. Don’t forget membership ultimately pays, hires and fires club staff. Could have bad repercussions for multiple parties depending on what/who in membership finds out. Some people in this world ultimately have that queen of hearts/off with their heads vibe and that would have ended badly.

I was on a golf trip in Alabama. There were only four of us.

Before the trip one of the guys said "I *think* I can get us on a really exclusive course, but we won't know until the day of. Make sure you bring a couple hundred in cash, we'll need it if we get to play."

Sure thing, the round came through. It was a weekday and the course we played was super nice and wasn't crowded at all.

I did think it was a little odd that the assistant pro put us straight from the car into carts and sent us to the first tee without going by the clubhouse first, but I was excited to play so I didn't really worry about it.

Finally when we were on the 17th hole or so here comes that assistant pro in a cart to check up on us. The guy who arranged the round took $200 from each of us and went up to meet the guy. Apparently our $800 went straight into his pocket with zero going to the course.

At the time I understood that it was wrong but I guess 30-year old me wasn't too concerned with the interests of the club. Essentially this pro was stealing from his course and/or shaking us down for the privilege of playing the esteemed course. Or both, I guess.
