Help on Shaft Choice - DG X100, PX 6.0, PX 6.5 -flighted, non flighted etc

Hi Everyone!

A topic that I am sure has been asked in one way or another many times, but I am not quite finding the nuances in the previous threads that make me feel comfortable to make a choice!

I currently am a 10 handicap, but I would say a "good" 10.  I have a good swing, lots of speed etc.  Just lack consistency to make me lower

My miss has always been a big draw/hook - one thing I have done recently is to have a lesson, where my swing plane has been improved (used to take the club a bit on the inside, and the lessons have helped that, and hooks have lessened).   Also just got 4 layers of tape added to grips, as my hands are large, which I believe might also help.

I have Cleveland CG16 tour, fitted with PX 6.0 standard - truth is I have no idea if flighted or non.  Driver SS is about 117-120mph on a normal easy swing, and can get it to 125+ quite easily.

PW distance about 145-155y

I hit the ball higher than most people, and would prefer lower flight for more control.  Would going to a stiffer shaft straighten out the draw/hooks even further, and offer lower ball flight than my current PX 6.0?

As far as I have read, the X100 would be next in terms of stiffness, and then the PX6.5 after that?  What about flighted/non-flighted?

In South Africa, PX shafts cost almost double a DG shaft, not sure if that is world standard or not, but worth mentioning.  A DG costs equivalent of $30-$35 and PX about $55.

Thanks in advance of any answers!

JJ

Is fitting impossible?

With the numbers you specify DG X7 would be a natural shaft to try
All Flighted models is discontinued (Project X), and DG never had that option, but True Temper have made several Flighted options thats now discontinued, but we might still find them.

One of them was True Temper Tour Prototype Monaco, the other was Tour Concept.
The first one is seen on EBAY.COM this week for a lower price than DG standard (199 USD for 3-PW)

Thank you @Howard_Jones, appreciate the input.  I wonder if I can get that shaft from our normal golf superstores.  Maybe only from a Club fitter.

Agreed - I should go for a fitting.  Problem is in my area of SA, I don't know of any other than the superstores, and I would prefer someone who is really specialised - but that is for me to sort out :).

What do the DG X7 offer me, before I google them?

Superstores is crap.....and they have no knowledge of players with your datas

DG X7 is simply a stronger model than X100 in the DG series (TX flex)

I am back and forth between X100 and Project X 6.5(Non flighted).

I like them both and are fairly similar.

X100 I feel are a little softer feeling and not quite as stiff as the 6.5, which late in the rounds I liked rather than really having to go after it.

Thanks. Interesting perspective. And how do you find them on ball flight and spin

Ah okay.  Yeah it's not that feasible then.  I thought maybe it was an abbreviation for San Antonio or Santa Ana or something when you said SA and missed the initial comment in your first post.  I concur with Howard, if you're truly that fast there's really only 3-4 shafts on the market that are going to fit you.  X7, PX 6.5/7.0 depending on weight preference, C-Taper/$-Taper 130X, or Modus 130X.  Everything else is not going to have enough butt stability for you and it will likely feel a bit too soft or lively under the hands.

Thank you.  I really am, not making up stories haha.

I had one club, my 3i which still had the stock S300 in it, and I gave it a swing, and it was super “Flicky” is my best answer.  Felt like the shaft was doing a lot in my hands. Would that be the feeling of “not stiff enough”?

A local club maker/fitter suggested we could tip trim and add to the butt. Would this work?

X100 hits a little higher but not by much.

Both spin the same, for me atleast.

I have tried DGX7 and 7.0 but they were too demanding.  I have driver clubbed speed in 115-120, to give you some perspective.  Irons I am looking for consistency and do not want to go after it like I do with a driver.

No probably not.  Unless your clubs are parallel tip you can't tip much of anything from a taper tip/.355 shaft, they are not designed for that.  You would be better off hardstepping usually in that case, however, it's really difficult to finetune hardstepping because it changes the feel so uniquely for each player.  Generally, you are looking at about 1/3rd of a flex change per hardstep/softstep.  The best scenario would be to just go to something like an X100 instead of trying to hardstep or tip a steel shaft (usually).

If you are looking to lower flight and reduce hooks I would simply try strengthening loft or playing a lower launching golf ball. Hooks could be caused by too upright of a lie angle. Doing those things is much more cost effective than changing shafts. Doesn't mean you still don't need different shafts.

S300 is not a very good fit for someone at your speed, even with a smooth tempo. Tipping incrementally makes the shaft play stiffer, but won't fix an incorrect shaft fit. Shafts are a timing device, something to "flicky" or "whippy" could throw off your release/timing.

Thanks everyone. Going for the shaft fitting assessment tomorrow with a pro. Managed to find one locally with a trackman. Let’s see.

Make sure to ask the pro about adjusting your lofts to change ball flight. You could be a candidate for new shafts + loft adjustments to bring the flight down.

It really doesn't matter. Just pick one you like the feel of. None of it will change your scores or fix your hook.

Most important piece to ball flight is lie angle. The ball reacts to where its hit, thats it.

Had a similar issue with my irons as well. Threw in Dynamic gold X7s through the set (srixon z785) and flight is much lower especially with long irons. and the weight is nice, helped my tempo greatly. Driver ss 120, and 6i carry 195

Thank you so much

I went for the assessment on a Flight Scope.  My 7i SS was 100-105 and 6i was 105-110.  The fitter wasn't certain that I should change my stiffness (as said I have PX 6.0 non F), and said an option was maybe a heavier shaft.  He let me hit a few with his Srixon irons which had Modus stiff, that he had tipped to be a bit stiffer, and are 120g.  They felt way more club head/tip heavy compared to mine.  He is going home to crunch numbers and give me a recommendation.

I think PX 6.0 are also 120g?

Another local driving range has a set of 4-PW X100 tour issues, just taken out of a new set (so the are new but second hand HAHA), selling for R1500 which is about 100-110 US dollars -really cheap I think?  I feel I should buy them before they are sold to some one else, and if I don't use them should easily be able to sell them again?

Would X100 tour issue add a bit of weight, and a slight bit of stiffness and a bit of weight compared to my PX 6.0?

When we talk shaft weight, its in its UNCUT condition, and PX is 0.5" longer than DG uncut, so to get compatible numbers we have to adjust for that, and ends up with

DG X100 =130 grams
PX 6.0 = 118.5 grams

Get a roll of lead tape (its often 1 grams pr inch) and measure up 11.5 grams
Now find the approximate middle of the shaft, and distribute the lead tape "head to grip" both ways from the middle mark on the underside of the shaft so you dont see it from address.

IF the lead tape you find is 1 grams pr inch, you need 11.5 inch of lead tape (29.2 cm)

Now you can try off or "simulate" the weight of a 130 gram shaft without changing it to see how you and your swing respond to that change.

DG X7 is 132 gram, (another 2 inches of lead tape) (extend the amount added with 1 inch in both ends)

Weight is always more important than flex, so figure out where to go on weight first.
