The truth about C-Tapers??

Tee1up4

Recommended Posts

Looking to tighten up dispersion and bring flight/spin down. I plan on testing very soon.

I’ve played in the past, PX 6.0(to be honest it was so long ago I don’t remember much), AMT White(liked them just fine), PX LZ(feels great but launch and spin too high).

On my short list of shafts to try/test are $-taper, Tour V, C-Taper and AMT White.

Curious to see if anyone has feedback or comparisons between them.

Between the $ Taper, C-Taper and Tour V, I will say that performance wise, C-Taper is the best for low spin, trajectory.  Easily the best performance of any shaft I have ever played, but the feel is horrible and wears and tears on the body.

Tour V advertises lower spin, but I did not see it in testing.

$ Taper is solid feel and performance was between standard Tour and C-Taper for me.

Totally agree with these statements. C TAPERS Worst feeling shafts I've played but they do lower spin and flight and have them in my R9 "B" stamps and in a set of ping eye 2plus . S taper have much better feel but I prefer the performance of the C tapers.

For me Ctaper did nothing that i wasn't getting from S300/X100 for years and years prior to them coming onto the market.

I played PX 6.0 for 15yrs before a few years back switching to composite.  But I have a set of C-Taper 's', $-Taper 's' in storage, and Tour V 's' in a set of RSi TP irons that guests use.

FYI: Kim Braly designed PX 6.0 for PX Shaft Co when it was a stand-alone before sold to True Temper.  Kim then founded KBS shafts, and not only designed KBS Tour, but the C-Taper line which IMO is very similar to PX line, in design.  $-Taper 120g is slightly different from KBS Tour 120g due to step pattern, and Tour V is a low-spin shaft, feels nothing like any of the aforementioned shafts.

AMT White is a nice ascending 3g weight shaft, and it's popular.  IMO these shafts didn't make my cut because of their bend profiles differ from what fits my swing best.  First, figure out what shaft weight fits you then bend profile.  Once you have that answer, look at shafts that fit your swing / temp.

Of the above shafts, I would go back one of these: PX 6.0 'S+' 120g, or 5.5 'S' 115g, or S-Taper 's' if that was in the cards, but it's not likely.  I am happy for the foreseeable future with Tensei AV White AM2 Irons 's' in 2i-4i, and MMT 125 's' in 5i-LW.

I’ve played Ctaper 125’s and 130’s with 6.0 and 6.5 project x’s mixed in over basically 20 years.   Played 125’s through college and now am into the 130’s and the 6.5 rifles.

Ctapers 130’s are the best low spin/ low launch option for me.  That being said, they’re also the least forgiving on bad swings and are far from smooth.   Easiest shaft to control trajectory with and work both ways for me.

Project X 6.5’s feel softer than the 130’s and are easier to load.  They don’t take near the effort to make the shaft work in my experience while still being plenty stout.

I only had about 300 rpm spin difference on gcquad between the 130 and the 6.5 rifle.  The rifle spun more.  I have the 130’s in a set of MP20’s and the 6.5 rifles in a set of Nike pro combo heads.  Ctaper 125’s in my MP15’s.  The MP20’s are what I’ve played all year.

i second all of this info.

Just switched from C-Tapers.  They absolutely kill your elbows/wrists.  And feel is certainly awful.  On mishits its like you hit a 2x4 with awful sound.

Tested the $Tapers, and they are indeed a great shaft.  I think they would be comparable to the STaper, just less harshness.  When I tested it came down to that shaft and a graphite.

Tour V is the tried and true version for KBS, its like vanilla.  You can NEVER go wrong with that flavor.  But it leaves something to be desired.

Why dont you just bend lofts stronger if you have a shaft set that feels good?

the tour v x you have is 120g i believe - but they make a tour spec x which is 130g.

intrigued as i have the 130 modus. i hit my buddies x7's and really liked the flight; but i have KBS in my wedges...figured if i could find a KBS shaft that would work, i'd like to maintain the continuity of feel.

If the X7 is your shaft, you'd be better off playing them in all your clubs.  If you wanted something a little softer in your wedges with  a proportional weight, you could go with DG X300....yes 300

I love my C-tapers, have them in 125g soft-stepped once for 6-PW Ping Blueprints and have the 120g straight in for 3-5 TM P770. Ctaper is a VERY stable shaft with very little kick anywhere. If you like feeling your shaft kick in specific areas, or like something softer in the grip, then Ctaper is not for you. I moved from the PX LX 6.5 to the Ctaper 125.

I hit with low spin pretty naturally, so you'd think having a low spin shaft wouldn't work for me. However, if I pair it with heads that aren't bent strong loft wise, it actually evens out. 6 iron I'm right around 5800 RPM, about 195 yards when I crank it.

Everything for me in the heavy X range of shafts I tend to soft step: X100, C-taper, PX 7.0, Modus 130X, PX-LZ etc. The PX 7.0 and Ctaper 130 are beyond me to hit even soft stepped for the most part.

I did not have nearly as much pain from C-Tapers as I did from Project X 6.5/7.0, but maybe that's just me. C-Tapers are great for trajectory control and where I think many folks go wrong is getting the wrong flex. I've worked as a fitter previously and clients were few and far between that truly needed the 130X Flex. Now, lots of folks play them and can play them and get away with it, but the shaft performs a lot better and feels a lot better if you get the correct flex. I used to play 130X SSx1 and transitioned into the 125 S+ and found a good middle ground. The 120S felt even better to me and offered the same level of control but I preferred heavier weight of the 125. Dispersion with these is great- it is difficult to feel a lot of load with them just because of the nature of the shaft but the left / right control and trajectory control is superb. I wouldn't be scared of them - just make sure you try a flex 1/2 softer to a full flex softer. You will be surprised how good they are. I don't play them currently but they're worth a shot.
