Which TaylorMade driver has been your fave?

Recommended Posts

This has made me realise how many Taylormade drivers I’ve had 😳.

r540xd, r7 quad, r7 425, r7 superquad, r9 super tri, r11s before a break then m3 and now m5.

My favourite to this day was the r7 superquad. I loved that club. My m5 isn’t far behind now though as I’ve had it from new.

R580XD TP - This was a tour only head that I had with a Fujikura VTLT and was a complete bomb stick

M5 440 Tour

R7 425 TP

R510 TP

M1 440

I have not felt the need to try the Sim series considering I hit the M5 on a rope and my driving distance hasn't slipped

I have a 8.5 580xd tp kicking around. I shafted it with a 73x wb this summer for fun at the range. Thing still balls very well, easy to hit straight. Not giving up much from today's offerings.

My favorite was a OG Sim D that I hot melted to a more neutral bias with a Ventus blue Velocore stiff shaft that played 45.25” and D3 SW. I should have never sold that damn thing!!!!!

The original Sim is incredible so long as you don’t fight an open face. Anybody that has quick hands should be playing that driver IMO. I had the hooks for a while with every club and the OG Sim with Ventus Blue 7X was silly long. Now have a couple of Sim2 heads in 8* and 9* I’m testing and really like. Much more neutral heads and more forgiving.

Oh man...

I played the 510tp way back. Loved it. Moved on to a cleveland then to rbz. From rbz I went to 16m2. Then to m4. Then to m5. Then to sim.

M2 was a great driver. I liked it a lot but cracked faces on 2 or 3 of them. After the last face cracked I decided i needed to find my next driver since i would eventually run out of quality m2 heads to buy. I hit m4 and it was faster than m2. But it was also more fade biased. I started tracking fairways hit and found the m4 to be less than ideal. I didn't toy around with loft settings because I was mostly ignorant to what did what.

I then gave m6 a very brief try...like 2.5 weeks. I hit too many pulls with it so I dumped it for the m5 while also getting deep into loft changes, center of gravity, gear effect, etc. With my newfound knowledge, I started to tinker away. In that tinkering I did a driver fitting to see if other drivers could compete and what different settings did for launch and spin. This was outdoors on a trackman. I ended up with a setup that was super straight. I almost literally stopped missing fairways. But I was also short of where both m2 and m4 had been putting me. The m5...was slow.

Then I saw the design of the sim and I got excited. Fitting with it showed it to be exactly what I was after...straight like the m5 but way faster. Adjustable front weight allowed me to dial in flight.

My first 6 months with sim were really good, but with an occasional ball that was off the planet. My original setup was stock rear weight and an added 4g front track weight to raise swingweight. The 4g was in the heel and the 10g toe side of center. I wanted to improve the sim and found the thread where folks mentioned that the tour guys were using heavier stock rear weights with hot melt in the heel. I started tinkering to get a more forgiving setup. Through testing I found the 17g weight to perform the best. I got rid of the 4g front weight. But I still.saw that big right miss here and there.

I then looked at the previously mentioned trackman driver fitting data. I logged every drive's face to path and noticed that I leave the face open to path more than 1.5 degrees about 60-65% of the time. So I turned my 9.0 sim up to 9.75 which closes the face 1.5 degrees. I then toyed with the 10g front weight. I hit 100 drives one day and found the weight setting that gives me a tiny fade if I square face to path (fade CoG and center contact produces right spin). The hard right miss was gone too since I rarely ever leave the face open to path enough to hit it hard right (with the closed setup.

I have a driver that I can just pound away on. I cracked the face on it a couple months ago and got a sim2 replacement. Didn't care for it. Great driver, but no movable weight tech.

Playing ventus blue 6x in it at 45".

Now this is some great reading, fk yeah!

- Something that continues to go long off the tee in the fairway
- Something that is a fairway finder when needed and long
- Something that high, consistent and helps with par 5’s
-  Something to help with long par3’s and short par 4’s

-  Something metal, lots of them and go the gaps I need
- Something metal, 2x of them and helps me 120y and in
- Putters - limited rotation because I cannot afford misses

I was a PING and Cobra player for many years and only moved to TM with an R15.  But that was after trying a SLDR and then noticing how many of the Tour Pros where playing SLDR's.

(Now I know because they made $$ playing them haha)

Ive tried them all though and the r9 Long Daddy was cool, looked legit and loved it but my Tour Issue R15 430 was some of my longest.

12* and opened up, some drives would go an extra 40+, was weird but LONG.

I played M2's Gen 1 and 2 I still have which I have been playing.  Hate the sound so just added cotton and made a HUGE difference.

Tour Issue M3 is my jam.  Not the longest but right there, muted sound when hit right, face and crown look the best to my eye.  Just a perfect head shape and what I feel the most comfortable with.

But recently went back to the Tour Issue 2017 M2 and been hitting BOMBS until I messed around with it.

I really need to spend some time on track man this winter and work on some thing.

Great POST, thanks for keeping these going fellas!

I skipped the 300 series. I played titleist j-vs then 510tp. After about 2 years with the 510 a friend showed up with a Cleveland hibore xl. It sounded like a rocket when the ball left the face. I hit it that day and out drove my 510 by 15 yards. Had one a couple weeks later.

Played that driver until the rbz....but I also bought it just when I mostly gave up the game.

I'll add...for the sim, I have always had the ability to hit driver off the deck. I was a weak teenager and needed driver-driver to reach 480 yard par 5s in the mid 90s. I got really good at driver off the deck (today's 3ws...).

Sim is the easiest driver to hit off the deck in a long time. It's a weapon for me. 420 par 4 with trouble left and/or right? I kick up a grass tee and hit a low fade that runs to 270-280 yards unless it's really wet.

M4 was nearly impossible to hit from the deck. 8.5 head and high CoG....ball did not want to lift.

So far I've only had an R11, M1, M3 and M6 D. So far I really like the M6 D but I am still not seeing any draw bias. But it seems to be playable and that works.

2016 M2 remains my favourite

Really didn't like the 2017 M1/2 (feel) so sold those and went back to the 2016

Loved the SLDR, had 3 of those

Wasn't a huge fan of my R15

R7 Superquad was great too

Haven't tried anything newer than 2017 yet, though I did pick up the SIM in store, but preferred the deeper face of my M2 at the time

I've only had a few TM drivers over the years

R510 TP 8.5* w/the Speeder shaft. ( I young and had the speed to hit it)

R9 9.5* Motore , short stint with that

R9 460 9.5* Diamana Blueboard 60, probably my favorite with best results

Tour Burner TP w/ Whiteboard ( low piercing rockets)

Tried a friends M2 and liked it, but never spent a lot of time with it. I remember it being long. I had steered clear of TM for a long time  due to their product cycles, and didn't care for the white.

Recently have played a Ping G400 for the last 2 years ( straightest driver I ever had ) and now a 425 Lst for the past 4 months ( Fit by CC w/ Oban Devotion 6/04, but not seeing results I'd like)

Recently purchased a Sim2Max 3HL, and if the driver feels anything like it, I'm very interested.

My club ho'ing has slowed down with the arrival of kids and some health issues limiting my golf but here is my ranking of TM drivers I've owned...

1 - R9 SuperTri - Had Delta Airlines not destroyed the actual club head, I would still be playing it. Had an Aldila RIP Alpha 80XX. was known as the Black Stick of Death

2 - 07 Burner TP - Harrison Mugen 70XX

3 - R510 TP - Stock Fujikura shaft

4 - R510 - had a X100 in this when I was teaching/playing tournament golf....that thing weighed a TON but it found fairways and was decently long.

I have tried nearly all of the carbon composite stuff and still own a 2017 M1 but I hate it. The sound and feel are just dead. I make a great swing, feel off the club is great and the result is trash. I make a crap swing, the feel is trash and the result is a murdered tee shot...I gave up and went back to an old Adams 9016D head and I am loving it.
