Which TaylorMade driver has been your fave?

Recommended Posts

Have played R1 Black, M2 2016, M2 2017, and M3, and M2 2016 was the best for me. I usually gravitate towards the adjustable model in their lineup, but something about the M2 2016 just worked. Made the mistake of trading it in for a M2 2017 because I got a good deal on it, and instantly regretted it.

In the past I'd have said R7 quad TP, I used it for a bunch of years and it was awesome.  Coming more current M4 D type is a great driver and also the SIM2.  I could play either the M4 or SIM2 and be really happy.    As a note, I still have the R7 and took it out a couple months ago.  Unfortunately age has had its impact on my swing speed and it's not anywhere the driver that I remember.

2016M2 - Longest driver I've ever hit, but could be very wild for me at times.

M5 - my favorite TM driver to date.  Best feeling driver I've ever hit and very consistent / accurate.  I would still be playing it if Titleist didn't knock it out of the park with the TSi series drivers this year.

M6

Right now I have a SIM2 max and an M6 and I always go back to the m6. Its sounds is way better and way more versatile as I can play any shot the hole requires.

The sim2 max is equally as long I just dont have the all the shots with it. Especially if I need to tee one down and hit it low to find the fairway or in a crosswind

Sim2 Max without a doubt.  With a stock ventus blue it is perfect for me. As do a shaft fitting over the winter to see if it can get better.

So might be a bit of a TaylorMade fanboy, but my favorite is actually the 2009 Burner TP, have somehow managed to accumulate 7 of those in a variety of different shafts, the five 8.5° pictured below and with a couple 9.5° heads too. Those are still my regular gamers to this day.

Have played in the past the following TM drivers:

 - Original Tour Burner w/titanium shaft

 - System 2 w/titanium shaft

 - DF Strong Driver

 - DF Fairway Driver

 - R510TP w/Speeder 757

 - R5 TP w/Diamana Blue

 - several ‘09 Burners as mentioned

 - couple Tour Burners too

 - few Aeroburner TPs as well

Somewhere along the way had a period with McHenry Metals, which could be considered a cousin of TaylorMade in a way. That was right before getting the R510TP, which as many have already echoed was a great club.

Only TM driver I've ever gotten along with was the 2007(?) TM Tour Burner TP.

Had a Diamana Whiteboard in it which was very effective taming some of my (too) high launch and (too) high spin.

Haven't gotten along with any TM driver since.

Man oh man, talk about flashback. I played TM drivers exclusively since my dad let me brorrow his orange burner when I was maybe 10-11.

r580xd TP. Bigger r510TP and was a whoa moment for me.

r7 Quad TP. Changed the game and what could be charged and expect d from a premium driver.

r9 Superdeep. If it fit it was to this day the most beautiful thing ever.

OG M1 was a game changer even though I stayed with Superdeep during this time.

M1 440. Best combo of looks and performance- M1 460 forgiveness with M1 430 performance.

M3 440 - last great driver made by TM. Feel has been lost and performance has obviously fallen since then.

I’ve since sadly been Callaway since the Epic Flash showed me how terrible the M5 was. It’s been that way every year since then. Hopefully TM regrouped and is getting back in the fight after fighting with Mizuno for 4th the last couple years.

The longest drives I have ever hit (320 - 330 yards) were with the SLDR 430 with an X-flex Fujikura Speeder 757.  Unfortunately, I could never get truly consistent performance from it.

With that said, my favorite TM drivers (in terms of consistent / repeatable performance):

1a.   1st generation R11, with a X-flex Mitsubishi Kai'Li shaft (65g)

1b.  1st generation SIM, with a 6.0 flex Project X HZRDUS RDX Blue shaft (70g)

2.  2nd generation M2, with a 6.0 flex Project X HZRDUS Yellow shaft (70g)

Separately, best 3 woods:

1.   1st gen SIM Ti, with Mitsubishi Diamana S+ X-flex (80g)

2.  RBZ Stage 2 Tour, various X-flex shafts (80g)

I’m still gaming the 2016 M2. I have upgraded from the stock shafts I have two different shafts one is softer and higher launching and the other is stiffer and lower launching so I swap them in and out depending on course and playing conditions. I also have an M5 head that I have set up for a fade and I use it on a few local courses that have a lot of danger on the left side. I have tried Ping G410 but always come back the OG M2. Something about it is just so balanced and predictable.
