355 yard par 4, tree lined OB, what you hitting off the tee?

Likely to pull the 2-iron knowing i'll be naked doing the Truffle Shuffle regardless of the club choice when my ball doesn't make it past the forward tees.

Yes, I suck and still bag a 2-iron. I feel it almost forces people to ask me to be in their outing groups (at least once), looks better, and the graphite seems to dull the pain of a hosel rocket.

if there's nothing I need to stay short of, I'd pound driver.  I can mess up with any club in my bag, there's nothing worse than pulling out a hybrid or 4 iron only to dump it out of bounds.  With my game, there's also a correlation between being as close to the pin as I can on any shot and scoring.  The only time I'll ever hit anything other than driver is if I need to stay short of something, or the hole is designed in a way where the huge part of the fairway is a 3w or hybrid and a driver will be in trouble if it's anything but a perfect driver.

Hitting driver well and it looks like I can aim down the left side for a fade - Driver

Not hitting driver so well and can aim down the right for a draw - 4 Wood

Looks like I have to hit it down a hallway - one of my hybrids, Probably the 818H1 which seems to go dead straight but this won't fall into your 240 dart requirement, at least not for me.

I hit my driver on almost every Par 4 or 5, because it is as straight as any of the alternatives from the tee (2 hybrid or 3/4 wood, depending on the day).  So if the hole just calls for "straight," I'm hitting driver.  I only hit less than driver if the hole calls for "short of trouble" or if there is a vast difference in the width of the landing areas for each club.

Depends on how well I have hit my driver on the previous holes. Is it windy? If I'm playing bogie golf or under par.

We carry 14 clubs in the bag.  Each club should have defined purposes, which are aligned with course management.  Course management to me means I start at the green and work my way back to the tee, to decide which club is best off the tee to insure the second shot is from where I want it to be.  Least that's how I do it... Even though my 2 iron and LW are favorites, my #1 most used club is course management.

Why? All you saying iron or fairway wood, why?

4i leaves me a sand wedge and makes for an easy hole. Not every hole is a green light, attack hole

Nope. My comment was meant tongue in cheek. Don’t you play a mini driver? Anyway, mea culpa, I apologize.

This question is all about confidence. And I’m shocked how many people don’t have confidence to hit driver. And for the people who don’t think they can hit driver, are they really going to hit a three wood or a hybrid or whatever down the middle of a tight fairway?

I just like to play aggressively.

I played the mini last year, SIM this year.

Even the best drivers of the ball miss fairways, that just doesn't sound like a hole I "need" to be aggressive on.

You need to get out more of you're "shocked" how many people aren't confident hitting driver on that hole. Lol

For some, it may be less about driver and more about confidence in a full wedge vs having a 40-50 yard shot.

Full disclosure, if there is any helping wind.... I'm driving that green 😉

I refuse to play scared. And I’m a better player for it.

While you’re waiting for your moment (down wind) I’m making my moment.

May the wind be ever at your back @PixlPutterman !!

Playing aggressive can be playing scared too. I know plenty of guys with no iron game and need to be as far off the tee as possible.

Knowing your game and managing the course to give your self the best opportunity to score, that's making a moment.

Putting yourself in the best possible position, for some, isn't bomb and gouge

As I said at the beginning of this ……. Maybe.

But I doubt it. I’d like to hear how “playing aggressive can be playing scared”. In my mind that’s crazy-talk.

The problem with this particular thread is that there really isn’t enough information to make a firm decision. The only info we have is it’s short and tight and there’s OB. To that I say, so what?

Its been a good talk and I sincerely apologize for the cheap shot about your mini driver.

I already gave you an example of aggressive being scared, not every one plays aggressive from a position of confidence lol. I could play 18 with only irons and be fine, I have enough confidence in my irons that I can leave the driver at home, but chicks dig the long ball do what cha gonna do? I know plenty of guys who have terrible iron games so they need to get as far off the tee as they can, that's aggressive based in fear to me.

I think what you are missing is there isn't one way to play the game, you asked why anyone was saying fairway or iron, you got an answer... It just wasn't "your" answer.

It's kinda like asking people why they don't attack every pin, some people just play for the middle of the green because they are more confident in their putter than a short sided chip...

No one should bash you for driver if you think that's what puts you in the best position off the tee, others manage their game different, that's all

PS, I miss that mini, shoulda never sold it lol

oK. I’m tired, I must have missed your example and going back I still can’t find it.

I’m afraid I’ve given this all I can give. Maybe I’ll try again tomorrow but I don’t think you’re going to get it.

Quick comment: You can play irons only and “be fine” but I’m guessing you don’t. And I’m guessing you don’t because you know that driver is a valuable asset to your score. All I’m saying is driver is a valuable asset to your score, and it’s a mentality, a choice, that can be made, to take advantage of that as frequently as possible. I advocate that mentality, no more, no less.

I agree to that, but that's not everyone.

I'm not sure what you want me to get? You asked the question not me.....

I bring my driver but it certainly doesn't come out on every hole.

"As frequently as possible...." Not everyone has the same "frequent"

I don't hit the ball straight, I play a fade.....a tight, tree lined hole.... I may not have the window space to feel confident I won't clip a tree trying to give my self room to work the ball... Where as I have all the confidence in the world my 4i is going where I aim it.

I'm not telling you to change your mentality, your tee decisions don't effect me, same as mine don't effect you 😁

This is a lot of back and forth justifying that people get around the course with different strategy lol

Per OP, for me most likely 3 iron for the "240 dart gun".  But I'd definitely try driver at times, try to hit a stinger 5 wood, and also 7 iron / 7 iron!
