Your 58* or 60* wedge, what bounce do you have?

playit

Recommended Posts

And why do you have that bounce? I have played a Cleveland 60* wedge a long time but it's worn out, need another. Actually, I need a full set of wedges. My 60 didn't have much bounce. I used it mostly as a scoring wedge on full shots into the green, say, 75 yards and in. Often, from tight lies. And flop shots and such. I might get a 58* as my shortest wedge. With little bounce. And get a 54* sand wedge for use in sand and other shots. With more bounce. What do you have and what do you think about bounce?

My 60 degree CBX 2 has 10 degrees bounce. I never really notice it, as my wedge swing is steep enough that the ball is long gone before the club hits the ground. I don't chip with it, and seldom use it out of the sand. It's my go to from 30 to 60 yards with a 3/4 to full swing. Less than 30 yards is chipping range for me. I don't use it much out of rough either, where I find less loft and more bounce helps prevent going under the ball. There it's usually my 54 degree SW with 12 degrees bounce.

My 52 is a lower bounce (6) than my 56 (12). I use the 52 for fairway and easy lies around the green. Pitches and chips. The higher bounce on the 56 works well for sand and heavier lies.

50 - 10

54 - 10

58 - 9

I live in the desert. Half the courses have very little sand in the bunkers. Middle of the road works best for me here.

When I lived in WA, my 58 had 14 degrees of bounce and was one of my favorite clubs in those “lush” conditions.

Vokey TVD 60k low bounce.  Really love

the wide sole with low bounce.  It plays with more bounce that it reads.  Not quite comfortable with it on full shots yet, but it’s great around the greens and in bunkers.  I live in Dallas, lots of hard pan and tight lies.

60 degree S grind. Versatile enough for me to use it from any lie and surprisingly good out of bunkers when open. Traditionally I’ve struggled with anything less than 12 out of bunkers.

On my 60°, I prefer 6° of bounce, because I only use it for flops or when I'm short sided, usually with the face very open. I want/need the leading edge close to the ground.

On my 56°, which is my sand wedge, I need 12°-14° for it to work in the bunkers we have here. I also use this club for most everything inside of 100 yards, and the higher bounce works well.

I do a bit of wedge rotation, some of which is based on whim, I'll admit, but also on the irons in the bag.  I've been playing a set with a 49* PW, some days I'll go 55/60, others it's 53/58.

I tend to like bounce.  I'm very slightly above average height, but have shorter arms, so I'm a bit steeper than some.  My course is clay based, firmer generally, but soft in wet conditions.

Two 58s in rotation, PM Grind 19 and a Wilson PMP, they have 12* and 10* respectively.  Both have narrower soles than the 60*.  The bounce on both lets me hit down on shots without digging.  They're also lovely in the sand, can play them square, opened, whatever is needed.

The 60 I use has 6* bounce, but a wide sole.  It's amazing on both firm and soft turf, and has been great out of the sand.  That wider sole makes it play with more than 6* when needed.

The 55 I carry with the 60 is an old Ram Tom Watson wedge.  Sole is medium to slightly narrow, with healthy bounce around 12* or 14* (unsure, honestly).  It keeps finding its way into the bag, I find it more versatile than one might expect for a late 80s or early 90s wedge.

TLDR... slightly steep, I like bounce.  🙂

10* on my 60, 12* on my 56. Both Cleveland Zipcores.

I play on courses that have Kikuyu fairways and rough so need a good amount of bounce around the green.

Bounce is a preventive measure for people that have a tendency to dig to China, and off hard-pan, rattle their teeth.  I learned the game using 2'-5' progressive bounce wedges, so low bounce is perfectly normal for me.  I just open the face to increase bounce.  Currently, I have an M grind 58'/8'.  My other wedge is F grind 52'/8' bounce.

At the beginning of 2020 I put 54/14 and a 58/12 Callaway PM19s in my bag. I found, after an initial adjustment period, the fit my game and swing quite well. I do tend to get steep when I’m not swinging my best. These reduce the tendency to dig. Out of rough, sand, and fairways they perform quit well.  I don’t see myself replacing them in the forseeable future.

My SM8 58* is a D grind with 12* of bounce mostly used out of bunkers with soft sand or short-sided shots out of moderate to deep rough.  I also carry a 54* with a S grind and 10* of bounce, mostly used for  80-90 yard full shots, longer bunker shots or bunkers with firm sand and for chips from clean lies where I want to run the ball to the hole.

I have an MD4 58*/8 C-grind (see below). I don't go too artistic with my clubhead set-up, but the C-grind does allow an open or closed face when needed.

This replaced an MD-PM 60*/10 U-grind. The 60* was great from greenside, but I had distance control problems on longer shots.

For bounce on SW, it depends in part on the sand you blast from. Most of the courses in my area have gone to heavier sand, so I went from a wide-sole 54*/12 to a 54*/10 S-grind. The bigger wide-sole flange was hanging up in the heavy sand too much. (Lighter flange generally equals lower bounce.)

Similar to what a few others do. I like a low bounce LW (6-8 deg) and a higher bounce SW (~12 deg). I play a variety of conditions and I'll choose the SW or LW more based on the lie than how high I want to hit it.

I just bought a Callaway Mack Daddy 58 degree with a bounce of 12. Only got to use it for one round so far. It has already paid for itself. I have a 54 degree SW with a bounce of 10, and a 50 degree with a bounce of 8. The 50 degree is a Vokey blade, the 54 and 58 are cavity backs. I use the 50 in sand traps with very hard, firm sand instead of the 54 and 58.
