I'm giving up on 3 wood!

It's a love/hate thing. I've had my Adam's for decades.  Oldest club in my bag by far. Without it I would have far fewer eagles. Of course without it I would also have far fewer triple boggies.

That is the last “new” three/four wood I had moderate success with.

It was a proto head low profile, seemed like a unusual number akin to “36/64” maybe.  Bought it off here and shafted it with a ‘ahina and enjoyed some eagle attempts that were new.  Also fed the fishes some, so there is that.  No doubt it was/is all on me.  Went searching the Bay recently for another head which tells me just how bad this sickness really is.

cheers,

Dang people really be out here thinking they can’t be competent with golf.  Yes you can hit it that far you just don’t know you can. 🤌🏻 It’s not that big of a reach those the moments you learn the most.
In HS I skied my driver and the plaque off the side said it was 260 to the middle. I grabbed my 3w and saw it land front edge bounce high and it settled in the right rough .
got my first eagle this year at nationals(njcaa) hitting 5w (223) to flag and left myself 9-11 feet or so and drained it.

moving onto my own point with OP I feel it is very possible for you to hit it where you can once you know how to hit a wood. But honestly I’ve moved my logic to be a little more realistic, as long as the loft gaps fit it kinda doesn’t matter what you’re moving towards the hole.
You probably can hit it just don’t have the proper setup that promotes consistency

You guys are nuts, you gotta make the 3W a weapon and learn to hit it. I prefer a softer shaft in my 3W than the rest of my woods as it allows me to hit draws, hooks or straight on demand…. Basically eliminates the right side of the course. Off the deck, hit down on it, like a long iron, imagine taking a shallow divot with it. On the tee, tee it up a little and sweep it.

I love hitting mine off the tee with a nice draw…. It typically goes further than most guys well hit drivers and gets into their head when playing for $$$!

Not too far behind you. Just got a TSi2 3 wood and it's my last attempt. If it doesn't work, the M2 L.I.F.T. 2 iron is back in the bag.

The TS2 and TSi2 are phenomenal, really easy to get off the deck and solid off the tee. I have the TS2 16.5 and it gets off the deck really easy. I ended up turning it down a degree (0.75, so it's 15.75*) to get the gapping right to my 5w. I don't see myself changing this setup at all.

I'm the opposite. I want a head that launches and spins a bit more and then use shaft to bring spin down. Forever gamed a 17m2. First shaft I had in it was a touch soft. Went to a low/low shaft tipped to the grip and it was perfect.

I've hit/tried a ton of 3ws lately. I'm now a huge fan of adjustable hosels and i think club makers need to start making the 3w at 16 std loft so we can deloft to open the face but also maintain loft.

Stz at 15 and ts2 16.5 set to 15.75 are the final contenders for my bag. Both around 57.5 lie. The 17m2 was just too upright.

For me, I figured out that modern club lengths were the problem.  I largely couldn't hit a 43" or 43.5" fwy wood off the deck, but when it was shortened to 42" (maybe 42.5"), it worked pretty well.

Somewhat the same here, spent so much time working on irons and becoming a good ball striker with them that fairway woods just didnt get a long with me. Couldnt get over the need to feel like I HAVE to sweep them when I know I can just pinch it like an iron.

Get a 4/5 wood with rails and then go down and get it. I got the new Cobra Tour Radspeed 5 wood, turned it down a degree and its been MONEY for me.

I spent the last decade playing driver - 2i, no woods in the bag, but this 5 wood is firmly in the bag now

It's purely a mental/confidence thing with me. Believe it or not 3 wood used to be my go to club but for some reason I now can't hit one? Maybe I need to settle on one and persevere with it?

I agree, there is a big difference between a 3 and 4 wood for some reason. My 4w is 16.5 and about 1.5" shorter than a 3W, but nearly as long, has far more height, and very good stopping power. I have seen it stop on a green with less than 10 feet of rollout.

With that said, I had a swing issue that was preventing me from hitting my 3W well. I was coming in steep with some early  extension, too quick.  That has been greatly minimized in my swing.  If my divot is similar to that of a iron, in front of the ball, then I can get height with my 3W now. I just need to swing it a bit better than the 4W.  If you are flipping your hands due to EE like I was, results are all over the place, but that could be said of anything.  If I make a competitive swing, I am going to get pretty good results.

good to in the  same company . I have not played  with 3 wood for many years  I have  5 w that is okay but it is like a  mini devils club   tops/ weak slice or pull hooks

Recently lengthen the shaft to 46 inches to make it same length  as   the driver and worked fabulous  just like my driver

It I treat it more like a minidriver  rather then something in between club performs for me    I think single length woods is the way to go LOL

My 3w is my favorite club, but it’s no longer in the bag. My 5w has taken over that spot and added another club for better gapping.

I think ppl can learn to hit their 3w or any club they struggle with. It’s all mental I think. I hate hybrids but with adjustable hosels, replacing the shaft to steel, and practicing with it the hybrid gets lots of play time.

now that I type this reply..a 3w would be nice to have if I struggle with the driver...

I could never hit a 3 wood consistently so I switched to a 5 wood for several years and swore by it. This year grabbed a more forgiving 3wood ( ping g425 max) and absolutely love it. Can hit it from anywhere and it flys. Not sure why, but this club is point and shoot and has made me a believer again

5 wood turned down is great.

The shorter length makes it easier to hit/control.

Get something lower spin like an SLDR and youll be in heaven

Epic, Rogue, Epic Flash are all very easy to hit and get up in the air with ease for me but most 3w I also struggle with.  I can't hit many Taylormade FWs well and when I do they don't go any farther than my 5w.  Only exception was the M6 3w, I hit that one really well but most look so shut at address, it was a no go.

Again though, Epic is in my bag now and also have an Epic Flash...both fantastic 3w's

I believe the standard Mavrik is pretty good too but I owned the Sub Zero Mavrik for a brief time and I think with the shaft I had in there (HZRDUS Black 75) it was too low spin.  I had a hard time elevating that one enough, consistently, to make it playable.

The new Callaway Epic Speeds felt great but the ball speed was not nearly as good as the Epic I have in the bag.

I think 4w or 5w would be a good option for most or go the hybrid route.  It is nice to have at least a 4w in the bag though.  I feel like with my FW set-up, I have a chance of getting close to most par 5's if I hit a bad drive where if I didn't have good FWs I'd be forced to lay-up after a bad drive - at least I have the option to send something up towards the green now if there's not too much trouble looming and get an opportunity to hit a good chip/pitch and still have a chance for birdie.

The number at the bottom of the club (3 wood, 5 wood, etc) is just a number.  We all have different clubhead speeds, deliver the club differently (dynamic loft), and have different needs for the courses we play.  I de-loft my woods and hybrids quite a bit and the 3 wood becomes useless for me off the deck.  I prefer a 5 wood or hybrid because they are more accurate and I can use them off the deck or from the tee.

I have my MAVRIK MAX 3 wood set to draw and it's plenty of fun to hit.  Still getting used to it but the results have been promising.  I'm also a big believer in a slightly weaker shaft in the fairway woods, so I have 5.5 EvenFlow Riptides and a 6.0 EvenFlow Riptide in my driver...

Yes I tend to agree with you as far as the shafts go. Most of the 3 woods I've tried have been stiff shaft and my driver is x stiff. I think I need to stick with the retro types if I'm going to find something I can get on with otherwise forget it and go to 2 iron or what some of the guys have suggested a 5 wood lofted down. Enjoy your Mavrik max🏌️👍🏼

Only two mention it before, so let me do so again: get a hybrid instead.

A 16o or 17o 2 hybrid will go almost or just as long and are so much easier to hit of the deck. I ordered a 2h to replace one that broke.

Am bad of the deck with most woods and certainly the 3w. Great of a tee though so it has replaced my driver. Once the 2h arrives, the 3w will go to the spare clubs bag though...

That's where I'm at; after years of trying to hit 3w or 4w from the deck I've ended up putting a 19° (turned down to 18°) hybrid in the bag. I know in theory it shouldn't go as far as a 3w, but my strike is better so it effectively does. Striking a 3w from the fairway became a bit of a coin flip for me, and I seemed to lose more than win!

This thread really has me thinking! I have been seriously considering trying the Mizuno CLK 16 deg and adding a inch to the shaft. I bet it would be a weapon of the tee or off the deck. There really isn’t many courses I play I actually need 3 wood length to reach a par 5 in 2. Here comes another $200+ experiment!
